Leaks from within Microsoft have revealed a suite of hi-tech new features for Microsoft's Windows Phone - including new software that will let the phones share apps with Windows PCs. A video, of Windows Phone chief Joe Belfiore, and supposedly for consumption by Microsoft's partner Nokia, lists a variety of hi-tech features due in a forthcoming update to Windows Phone software. The key feature is that apps can be shared more easily with Windows PCs, in the same way as software is shared across Apple's iPhone and iPad.

now if only MS would make a fully functional tablet that costs 200 OR LESS.

It’s an Apple product. They make no other kind.
Windows PCs require a mouse, with mouse gestures, clicks, "mouse-over", right-click.
Tablets require touch. it's a different usage model. Ask anybody who has tried to use a "Remote Desktop Connection" app on a tablet to log into their Windows PC. You HAVE to use a different -- mouse oriented -- finger model on the tablet. And it's tough. Do-able, but not trivial.
So, run the "same app" on a PC (mouse, no touch) and a tablet (touch, no mouse)? Somebody is pulling this claim out of their derriere, or it's not accurately described.
Good tablets will eventually get under $200. Whether MS will make them is a different question....

My guess is, what they’re really saying is there will be a .NET runtime for the mobile devices, so “any” .NET app theoretically could run there.
It’s only a guess.
My Droid came preloaded with Quikoffice. This processor/spreadsheet/powerpoint suite of apps produces documents that can be easily read by Microsoft Office, unlike that disaster MS Works.
The new vesions of windows are supposed to have touch already installed. There are already windows tablets but they are just way overpriced.
Windows phone is probably the most user friendly phone on the market. SOme say too user friendly.
Two comments:
1. You didn’t need to be Nostradamus to figure out that this is the direction that MS would want to head. Obviously they want to leverage their mastery of one market into a mastery of the newer, potentially more important market.
2. I personally don’t see it - I don’t see people with mobile phones or tablets having a great need to tweak their spreadsheet or their requirements MS Word doc. I’m pretty (somewhat?) sure that tablets already can *display* PPT prezos - that would the *one* case that really *would* make sense. All the rest? Meh.
As devices grow and the lines between PC and phone blur I think you’ll find some devices mainly for consuming data (like viewing excel or word...maybe with slight edits) and others for full on editing. But it could be one and the same device at the core and then you just plug it in to the “dock” to get the full experience. They have those now but the hardware isn’t there yet to make it a great experience yet.
Imagine having a phone with a 4” screen. You can plug that into a tablet/pad device and have all the same data but now have some extra ports/add-ons and a larger screen to interface with. Or plug that phone into a dock and get full monitor and keyboard/mouse support and full suite of USB add-ons. You always have the right device right at your hands and it can run all your software.
Can I jailbreak it and run Linux instead?
Remapping IO is trivial. And yes, I’ve used VNC and RDP from both an iPad and an iPhone to work on Windows servers remotely.
Windows doesn’t require anything with mouse-over, gestures or right clicks. Those features are there for advanced users, but everything you can do with those you can do with the menus and left clicks, which a touchpad can handle fine. It’ll aggravate power users, but the other 95% of the install base won’t even notice, most of them don’t even know what those things are if you told them to do it.
No disagreement at all. I’m sure the future is all that you describe and more.
Still as long as you have cloud services and apps the need to run the, let’s say, Office software directly on your mobile device becomes much less. Seems like you’ll be more likely to access both document and app from the cloud than to worry about whether MS Word runs on your phone.
Secondly, I just don’t think that these “Office” apps are the killer apps that they once were. Partly due to the above but partly just because the world is changing. 15 years ago or so, you forked over huge $$$ to MS for their Office suite in a big hefty box, with huge, thick manuals, and visions of “productivity” dancing in your head. It hasn’t gone away entirely to be sure, I just don’t think the whole “Office” craze is what it once was.
Yeah, but I can’t synch the damn thing to my office Outlook email, calendar or contacts. It’s freakin’ WINDOWS 7 - the SAME OS - but it won’t synch, and Zune is a complete waste.
Wish I had my Nokia back.
