Despite FDA warnings and pet deaths, pet food companies won’t recall treats

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is again cautioning consumers that chicken jerky products for dogs (also sold as chicken tenders, strips or treats) may be associated with illness in dogs. In the last 12 months, FDA has seen an increase in the number of complaints it received of dog illnesses associated with consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China.

Now, four months later, pets are still dying from these treats. And, since the FDA testing has been inconclusive, the pet food companies that sell them aren’t recalling them. Again, that’s even though many pets are dying. Some of the pet food companies involved include well known pet food brands Purina and Dogswell.

Because tests by the FDA are inconclusive, pet treat manufacturers are not required by law to recall their products, and none of them have volunteered to do so. But given that the tests have not pinpointed the contaminant does not mean it is not contaminated. The FDA issued a warning to pet owners in November, 2011 in regards to this issue.

The question many are asking is how many dogs will have to die before the products are recalled? It is already estimated that the dead and dying are numbered at more than 500. This number does not count all of the cases that have not made the connection yet between a pet’s illness and the treats. The treats are causing kidney failure and Fanconi syndrome, with some cases resulting in death; others, in chronic kidney disease...

...At a news conference today in Cleveland, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich both petitioned the FDA to step up their investigation. They both called for the Food and Drug Administration to take immediate action ...

Chinese melamine killed my parent's beloved cocker spaniel and losing that dog almost killed my dad, as his heart was utterly broken when he lost his girl.

Since then, I've learned to read the labels and NEVER buy any dog food or treats from China. There are several very fine dog foods made here in the USA, but American made rawhide is tough to find. Even things like CET products are made in Mexico now.

I keep looking, though. I can't think of a single thing I've done in this life that would justify the love and devotion my dogs seem to have for me, but I try to earn it by giving them the safest, best quality food and treats available.

I have stopped buying anything that comes into contact with food..from china..mugs, dishes, etc pots and pans.

I bought some dishes from Poland, Italy or best yet from the USA.

the dog food I buy is from Blue Buffalo..all made in this country.i think Newman’s Own also is produced in Calif. and meets organic standards. I am taking no chances with me or my pupster!Sure, it might be a little more costly..but vet bills or the loss of my pupster is way more costly for me.
For bones, I go to the butcher and get her marrow bones, which she eats raw ( NOT cooked!).

[I use plain old hooves. Dogs love them and they are cheap.]

Lol, that reminds me of years ago when we would have someone come to groom the horses hooves. My little dog, back then, would try to eat them and I would stop him.

I buy all Purina products and have never had a problem.

I am sorry to hear about Muffy. Callie went downhill so fast, within hours. At first we thought she had gotten into rat poison or something but she never went outside off leash. Just shocking when they go so fast.

When I had JRT’s, the would tear those stinky things

Thank you! I appreciate you alerting me very much. So many times before I have checked and Purina wasn't on the lists so I grew too comfortable!!

Looks like I'll be doing some online research because the Purina links in the article were just ads.
