BCS officials to revisit college football playoff ideas this week

The folks who bring you the Bowl Championship Series have a few words of warning for college football fans craving a national playoff:

Slow down. Take a breath.

Before hardcore college football followers get ahead of themselves and start booking plane flights and hotel rooms for the first actual living, breathing playoff, some BCS powers caution against the expectation that a creation of a plus-one format or any other type of postseason model is a done deal. Not yet, anyway.

The NFL has a 9-7 champion, rendering all those regular season games I paid big bucks to see quite meaningless. I don’t want to see college football go the same direction. I would hate to see a four loss team win a championship.

No way that could happen under Phil Steele’s playoff plan, which has the added advantage of keeping the current traditional bowl system alive.

Without reading all the conversation has been 4 teams. Nobody ranked up there with more than 2 losses and even then its going to be a team with a killer (SEC) schedule.

BCS can eat it. I’ve not watched their “championship” game for years now. I know my boycott doesn’t mean much to the NCAA, but thanks to their idiocy, the NCAA BCS doesn’t mean much to me either.

Yeah, great. What are you guys going to do about all the football players who can't hold together the expectations of a football team, a coach AND their studies for another two-three weeks? Oh, yeah. The doggone studies. Well, we just can't expect them to do the studies, can we? We'll just have to let the guys who can only finish three years of a four-year education, worry about themselves. Besides, there's only room for so many media sports majors on ESPN and Foxsports. Shoot these degree-less ex college football players will just have to fend for themselves.

You know that's going to happen. But heck, as long as you guys get more beer-drinking and sittin'-around-the-house-in-your-underwear-fartin'-and-scratchin'-your-nuts time, you'll be happy.

The outcry from fans has reached a fever pitch in light of sagging bowl television ratings, which have declined 37 percent since 1998, the first year of the BCS.

Ratings have tanked because they saturated the market with almost 40 bowl games and SEC dominance of the BCS Championship.

The BCS is a stupid system. Alabama lost to LSU. LSU lost to Alabama. Arkansas lost to LSU. Arkansas lost to Alabama. Shouldn’t Arkansas have had a rematch? Makes sense to me.

A playoff is way overdue. That being said, a plus one format is just more of the same old garbage. There are 11 FBS(former Div 1A) conferences and only teams from 6 of those conferences get a real shot at playing for a national championship.
Over the past 5 years Utah embarrased Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, Boise St shocked Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, and TCU beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. The excuses given by ESPN, the BCS, and SEC fans to keep deserving so-called mid-majors out of the National Championship game make me want to puke.
The number one garbage argument is “Strength of Schedule”. The problem with that is BCS teams would rather play FCS(former Div1AA) in out of conference games. If they do schedule a Boise, TCU, or Utah the game will either be at a neutral site or at the BCS team’s home stadium. They will never play on the little guys home turf. Their argument to support this chicken shiite attiude is “ We have nothing to gain by beating TCU in their house, but we will suffer greatly in the polls if we lose” You can’t have it both ways, if the non AQs are not good enough to play for a National Champoinship then why are you so afraid to play them? The SEC is notorious for their garbage OOC schedules, going against teams like the Citidel, Louisianna Tech, or Middle Tennesee St.
The second garbage argument is the “Our Conference Schedule is more brutal than yours” argument. No one is afraid of Mississippi, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Wake Forrest, Washington St, Syracuse or Boston College.
The last argument of “The Regular Season Matters” got blown out of the water big time this season with the LSU-Alabama rematch debacle. If the regular season matters so damn much then Alabama should not have been in that game period.
The BSC is one of the biggest scams ever. The achronym should stand for Big Crock of Shiite, not Bowl Championship Series.
The only solution is a 16 team playoff with all 11 conference champs and the 5 highest ranked non conference winners as at large teams. Let it be decided not by some arbitrary coaches poll or some faceless computer, decide it on the field.

I agree with your post wholeheartedly. I don’t think we will ever see a 16 team playoff as much as I’d like to see one. Maybe an 8 team in the future is possible. I’ll take a 4 team playoff over the current system we have today. If I were a coach and coaching a meaningless bowl game, I’d only play seniors who were not going to the NFL. Why risk a career ending injury to a next year’s starter or to a kid who has a chance to play professionally.

I think the BCS should be disbanded. College ball should go back to the indeterminate bowl system and not try to define an "official" national champion. Let the best eight or ten teams fight it out on New Year's and let the fans argue about who is "Number One" for the next year.

I know that won't happen because big college football is driven by money now, but it would be far better that way.

Plus, we won't have to be tortured by embarrassments like the last BCS game.

16 team playoff with all 11 conference champs and the 5 highest ranked non conference winners as at large

An interesting proposal. A bit like the basketball tournament. Would this require shortening the regular season?

You could make it a 10 game regular season like the FCS division does, and hold the playoff games during the Bowl season. Right now as it is there is a 20 day gap between the last regular season game and the 1st bowl game. Teams that play in the BCS games end up with a 30-35 day gap between games. During this period 90% of schools are on Christmas break, so the ignorant argument that players would miss class time is also pure garbage.

That’s when most schools do final exams.
(not that it would matter to most of the D-1 studs, LOL)
