Was the tossed stone marked somehow to identify it (not to the dog, but to the one who threw it)?

The dog had five or six baseball and softball size rocks he use to carry around in his mouth like a tennis ball. I was surprised the big rocks didn’t hurt his teeth or his mouth. The area of water wasn’t real big. It was a 10X10 area of a stream that pooled to close to four feet deep.
