Plane grounded due to pilots' ages

LONDON, - The British Civil Aviation Authority said a LOT Polish Airlines flight from London to Warsaw was grounded when both pilots were found to be over 60.

The agency said inspectors had the flight grounded at London's Heathrow airport and passengers had to wait 5 hours for a reserve pilot to be flown in from Poland after inspectors discovered both pilots were over the age of 60, a violation of international air regulations, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

"LOT knows the rules and strictly adheres to them," the airline said in a statement. "But in this case there was an unfortunate coincidence. The crew roster was completed shortly before the aircraft left Warsaw, and the crew scheduling system did not issue a warning that both pilots were over 60, which it always does."

In 2006 the International Civil Aviation Authority required pilots over the age of 60 to be paired with pilots under 60 after it extended the maximum age to 65.

They expect me to beleive that no one knew that both pilots were over 60 years old until just before they were to take off?

Surely, they can’t be serious...

More government absurdity. If you accept the validity of this, then you have to believe that a pilot who is 59 years 364 days old is without risk, but a pilot who is a day older suddenly becomes much riskier. Typical bureaucratic “thought.”

No, but you have to define a limit somewhere. We could extend your argument day-by-day to absurdity. Is the pilot who is 64 years and 364 days suddenly incapacitated when he has his birthday the next day? 75? 85?

What is not arguable is that statistically people in the 60-65 age group are more likely to be at phsiological risk than those 55-60. And the 20-20 vision that got them hired at age 30 is almost certain to be presbyopic and the night vision declining at 60, even 55.

Tell you what - next time you have open heart surgery, ask for that 80 year old surgeon who's healthy as a horse out there on the golf course. And hire Willie Mays for centerfield on your favorite team.

Obviously, it doesn't always do that.

What if Obammie were a pilot, and as you well know, his birth certificate cannot be found?

What is not arguable relevant is yada yada yada

Pilots have to pass an annual physical (unless they work for any level of government). Go by the results of that.

Pilots have to pass an annual physical

Actually, it's a semi-annual physical, so your premise starts off wrong. Additionally, for those in the 60-65 block, there are statistically more failures and loss of licenses for physical reasons than in any other age group, although this would seem obvious to anyone but the guys at ALPA.

Cardiac incidents and other incapacitating attacks like kidney stones, strokes, are statistically higher in the 60-65 group. The fact that you passed a physical yesterday, often at a "friendly" FAA-designated but private practice flight medical examiner, does not preclude you may not have an incapacitation the next day.

You may find that reportable incidents for the 60-65 group, even though the data is still sparse because of recent approval of post-60 pilots, are higher than any other 5 year group. The FAA doesn't like to publish data that might show it made the wrong call in allowing 65 year olds to fly.

Why do you think that they require one of the pilots to be under 60?

Because the bureaucratic/government mindset is incapable of rational thought and requires a one size fits all rule to function? EXCEPT of course for pilots who fly for the government who don't have to pass any physical. Guy I know who had had triple bypass still flies copters for the Clayton county sheriffs department, and he's getting pretty old. He flew Hueys in Vietnam.

Sounds to me like you think inflexible mindless rules are a good thing.
