When MasterImage 3D announced two new displays for smartphones and tablets, you knew a hands-on would be inevitable. Based on the company's patented cell matrix parallax barrier, each display promises to eliminate much of the headaches typically associated with glasses-free 3D. As an added benefit of the cell matrix configuration, more light is allowed to pass through, which should prolong battery life. The smartphone display measures 4.3-inches at 720p resolution, while the tablet sizes up at 10.1-inches with a 1920 x 1200 layout. Generally, our thoughts on MasterImage's 3D technology were two-fold. First, it's absolutely true that the display is less nausea inducing, but when the image was viewed at its most proper angle, the three-dimensional effects were also less awe-inspiring. Nonetheless, the company has lined up partners for both displays and you should see the handiwork featured in consumer technology by the second half of this year.

MasterImage is a company that wants to make glasses free 3D tablets and phones a reality and it claims it got things better than the competition.
Back at CES had a chance to see a 4.3-inch demo and at the Mobile World congress 2012 that starts next week in Barcelona Spain, the company will showcase a 10.1-inch version powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4.
The 4.3 inch version weve seen looked better than Nintendo 3DS or LG Optimus 3D weve seen before. It didnt hurt our eyes and it was quite pleasant to look at. Qualcomm will demonstrate glasses free Mobile Development Platform (MDP) tablet with a WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution display. This sounds like a top notch tablet resolution and it is powered by Snapdragon S4 CPU. Premium content that will be showcased at both Qualcomm and MasterImage booths comes from 3net the Discovery/Sony/Imax 3D joint venture and 3D animated comics.
The MDP Tablet 3D Edition will feature MasterImage 3Ds Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier technology and will run Android 4.0. The demonstration will feature Qualcomms 2D to 3D conversion technology, which enables real-time 2D to stereoscopic 3D conversion of videos and games.
Last week we spoke with Roy Taylor, GM and EVP MasterImage 3D Display and he confirmed that there should be some customers launching tablets and phones based on their latest 4.3 and 10.1-inch screens with 3Ds Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier technology and there will be some tier one names coming with this stuff in early 2013.
Qualcomm sounds like a sweet deal for MasterImage as they convinced one of the biggest ARM manufacturers to work with their glass-free 3D technology. 3D done right might be the next big thing and having a phone or a tablet that can show both 2D and 3D at no extra cost, should like a good idea for not so far future.

Wipes the floor with OMAP4 and Tegra 3
Qualcomms next generation S4 MSM8960 was put through its paces by PCmag and the new super-phone chip seems to be a very promising piece of silicon.
The MSM8960 is the first of Qualcomms next generation S4 series (Krait) chips and it is a 1.5GHz dual-core stamped out in 28nm. PCmag compared the new chip to Texas Instruments OMAP4460 of Galaxy Nexus fame and Nvidias Tegra 3, which we know from the Asus flagship Transformer Prime tablet.
The chip, stuck in a Qualcomm development platform rather than an actual product, was tested in AnTuTu, NenaMark2, Browsermark, SunSpider and CaffeineMark. The results? It managed to outpace the OMAP and Tegra in every single test, sometimes with a very wide margin. In SunSpider and Browsermark it was between 15 and 25 percent faster than the competition.
If you were expecting Nvidia to win back some dignity in graphics performance, think again. The S4 features Adreno 225 graphics and it outpaces Nvidia and TI in graphics tests as well. In NenaMark it scored 59.9, while Tegra 3 and OMAP4 managed 45.3 and 23.8 respectively. The only bench where the S4 lost to Tegra was AnTuTu.
The impressive results may sound a bit surprising, but it is worth noting that Qualcomms Krait architecture is loosely based on ARMs A15 core, while Tegra 3 sticks with the old A9. TIs next generation OMAP5 and Samsungs Exynos 5250 feature a similar A15 dual-core layout, which means we can expect excellent performance from them as well.
