I thought win 2000 was for servers, not desktops. I dont’ remember because I never had either one of them. I went from 98 to xp.

2000 was NT. Microsoft was still selling the regular and heavy-duty versions. ME was so bad that they used NT as the basis for XP and discontinued the weaker version.

Now they are trying to separate the systems again with Pro, home and media editions, but the basic kernel is the same.

No, win 2000 was for desktops. It was a huge improvement over win 98 and I used it until 2007 or 2008. There was no "activation" so you could install it over and over again on different computers. As far as I could tell, XP was only slightly better but it needed activation, and that was a huge drawback.
