Interesting add-on for Firefox - Collusion

Posted on 03/03/2012 6:52:18 PM PST by djf

I just installed the "Collusion" add-on to Firefox. Anybody else tried this one?

It shows a graphic of websites that are supposedly tracking you when you open a page.

So far, FR is clean. Rense IS NOT! Neither is Drudge!

Not sure exactly what it means by "websites that are tracking me". Cookies? One of those weird pixel thingamajigs?

I may leave it installed, I might trash it, not sure yet...

Do we know this, or is this just supposition?

I think people are getting the wrong idea...

You are already being tracked by websites...be it simple Access logs or by cookies and other info harvesters.

This does plug-in does not track you - it just represents the tracking graphically. (and reveal the “Collusion” of sites tracking you)

Example - When you visit a website - look down in the lower left...you’ll see all the surrogate info collectors flashing by in the status bar (googleanalytics, quantserve, adyeild to name some common ones) - thats the stuff you’ll see in the graph.

If you’re using NoScript or something similar - you probably will appear as untracked - (or you would hope)

If the Ford Foundation wants data - they can just buy it from google - thats how they make money(one of the ways). If anything there blowing the whistle on a lot of info harvesting that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Why buy the data from google if you are a big fat global social engineer and can create own data collection operation?

Thanks!
I rebooted and finally got the program installed.
Damn. I am old and get easily frustrated sometimes.
I’m looking forward to seeing how well this thing works.

On my version of FF the icon is up next to the URL box.

Wouldn’t it be cool if the installation gave you several possible places to place the icon?

Take a look at TrackerBlock from http://www.privacychoice.org/

It is called DoNotTrack+ from http://abine.com.

Very good program, I suggest ever-one give it a try. Can’t stop all Mal-ware, but ever bit helps, and “do not track” prevents add-ware.

Hmm... I have the latest version of FF, but I only have the Ghostery icon and my video downloader visible in the address toolbar. Ah well, finding Collusion is way down on my list of priorities right now.

Cool tool, though. Thanks for turning me on to it.
