People love stories about someone winning the lottery and then giving the money away. They're less likely to feel fondly about Amanda Clayton, who won $1 million in the Michigan State Lottery but is still collecting food stamps.
"I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn't, I thought maybe it was OK because I'm not working," Clayton, 24, told Local 4 news in Detroit.
Back in December, a woman in Washington State fell under scrutiny when it was revealed she was receiving state economic benefits even though she lives in a $1 million waterfront home on Lake Washington.
Clayton, who says she owns two homes and a new car, receives $200 a month in food assistance from the state-issued Michigan Bridge Card, which is meant to benefit lower-income residents in the nation's eigth most economically depressed state.

It gets worse, some dim blonde on O’Reilly named Huddy defended it.
It is because these programs go by previous year income. The lottery wins are not income until the following year. Even then I am not sure how they are reported so this person STILL may be qualified for food stamps. We have a dumb system for sure.
If I won $1 million, I don’t think I’d move into a $1 million home. With all my financial reserves immediately exhausted, and with no job skills, I would worry that I might end up collecting food stamps. Oh, wait a minute ...
Why not?
I mean it’s just a couple hundred bucks a month
They’re creating tens of billions of Baraqqi/Bernanke minibucks every month.....
Considering that her new financial status will probably only last a couple of months, she will be back in the bread line soon. The 500k she banked after lump sum payout and taxes will not last as long as she thinks it will, especially if she spends like it will last forever.
That being said, the state should take the bull by the horns and drop her from their financial aid system.
If she didn’t invest any of her winnings, she won’t have any income. If she did invest, she may have a shock when the government takes more than she “earned” and kicks her off food stamps.
She’s probably mortgaged and underwater. :-)
But, but she took a lump sum payout and ONLY ended up with $700,000 after taxes! Surely you wouldn’t deny she needs the extra $200.00 a month to eat on!
Sarc/off
She looks like a leech.
My guess is she'll have jack squat in 12 months and "need" food stamps again. Not to mention lottery money.
I saw the video interview and this young lady is a definite fit in the category of “major league bubble-heads”. In two or three years, if not before, she’ll be bankrupt/broke.
Spot on. LOL! 500k doesn’t go far in the world today.
These people always seem to end up pissing their winnings away, so its just as well they let her keep her ebt card.
I love a good heartwarming welfare cheater story.
