'Invisible tsunami' of rising sea levels puts US coasts at risk, expert says

“Sea level rise is like an invisible tsunami, building force while we do almost nothing,” Strauss told The New York Times. “We have a closing window of time to prevent the worst by preparing for higher seas.”

We should also be spending taxpayer $$ preparing for monkeys flying out of peoples butts. All of New York could be overrun by these flying monkeys. The time to act is now.

The “Won” will simply:
1. Command the seas to retreat and stay retreated.
2. Tax the inundated lands according to acreage and bill G*dbased accordingly.

“Obama will make fundamental changes” takes on a whole new meaning.

Or not.

Oh God, not another crisis!

I’ve endured three of these in my lifetime. First, the “O” zone was going to collapse from CFCs and I’d die of cancer. Then Global Warming and I’d burn up or drown! Now, a secret flood!

Sounds like the Jews fleeing Egypt! Is there no end!!!

It's so invisible, you can't even see the seas rise AT ALL!

Now THAT'S invisible.

Poor folks. There has been no rise or fall in sea level over the last 15 years that was due to anything but fluctuation from heating/cooling and other events that are not due to increased amounts of water from melting ice packs.
Morner remarks that "prior to 5000-6000 BP, all sea level curves are dominated by a general rise in sea level in true glacial eustatic response to the melting of continental ice caps," but that "sea level records are now dominated by the irregular redistribution of water masses over the globe ... primarily driven by variations in ocean current intensity and in the atmospheric circulation system and maybe even in some deformation of the gravitational potential surface."

With respect to the last 150 years, Morner notes that "the mean eustatic rise in sea level for the period 1850-1930 was [o]n the order of 1.0-1.1 mm/year," but that "after 1930-40, this rise seems to have stopped (Pirazzoli et al., 1989; Morner, 1973, 2000)." This stasis, in his words, "lasted, at least, up to the mid-60s." Thereafter, with the advent of the TOPEX/POSEIDON mission, Morner notes that "the record can be divided into three parts: (1) 1993-1996 with a clear trend of stability, (2) 1997-1998 with a high-amplitude rise and fall recording the ENSO event of these years and (3) 1998-2000 with an irregular record of no clear tendency." Most important of all, in his words, "there is a total absence of any recent 'acceleration in sea level rise' as often claimed by IPCC and related groups."

What it means

Writing on behalf of the INQUA Commission on Sea Level Changes and Coastal Evolution, Morner says that "when we consider past records, recorded variability, causational processes involved and the last centuries' data, our best estimate of possible future sea level changes is +10 ± 10 cm in a century or, maybe, even +5 ± 15 cm." Hence, in his words, "we have to discard the model output of IPCC (2001) as untenable, not to say impossible (Morner, 1995; INQUA, 2000), and we cite the Gilgamesh Epos from about 5000 BP saying: Lay upon the sinner his sin. Lay upon the transgressioner his transgression." Or to put it more bluntly, as Morner does in the final sentence of his abstract, "there is no fear of any massive future flooding as claimed in most global warming scenarios."

I have lived on the water all of my life, and I have noticed the slow rise in seas level> I don’t know why it is rising, but it started long before the Global warming BS. It will be going on long after Global warming is proven to be BS too. It isn’t something that will happen tomorrow, but is is rising.

IMO there isn’t a damned thing we can do about it, and it isn’t caused by Global warming, but by some other decision Mother Nature has made.It is slow and it is inexorable.

I wouldn’t run our and buy a piece of land in Arizona expecting it to be waterfront in a generations lifetime.

Anyone quoting PMSNBC should be tombstoned !!!
Just kidding :)

I now live only about 75 feet from the sea, but only for the last three years.
I do not know how one can judge sea level rise or fall
at a given location, as subduction can explain an apparent
rise.
Tidal change, alone, can make it almost impossible to
detect any AGW sea level rise.

To say it is because of melting ice is just ludicrous, and even if there is ice melt, it would have to be runoff from land, and not sea ice, in order to cause a rise in sea level.

I must be a tad older than you are. We were all going to die in a nuclear war (Duck and Cover!), then we were going to die from Nuclear Winter, then it was the coming Ice Age, then the Ozone Hole...

All crisis, all the time.

It's like watching a serial on TV, just waiting to see what next season will bring.

I live over 200 miles from the coastline and can see mountains on the horizon. Geologists say the land my home sits on was once underwater and will some day in the distant future be underwater as will the mountains. This will happen no matter what man does or doesn’t do about “global warming”.

Time for my morning coffee.

‘Invisible tsunami’ of rising sea levels puts US coasts at risk, expert says.

Typical alarmist propaganda, and who are these “experts”?

Matter cannot be created or destroyed. Where are they going to get all the water. The antarctic shelf is back to normal. The arctic melt down is insignificant worldwide.

Obama is putting the entire country at risk, not mother nature.

Personally, I’d be more worried about the invisible creatures that that Eastern Airline flight attendant mentioned last Friday. Of course, to cover up the full story they dragged her off the plane before she could scream all the details. She’s far more credible than the sea level rising crowd.

I just fed my horses here in Arizona. They are knee deep in invisible water, but they don’t seem to mind it much. I kind of like it, but I’m puzzled why the folks in Tucson, 1000’ lower than me, haven’t drowned and stopped demanding my money in taxes...
