I watched this on TCM a couple of years ago. Robert Osborne had Alec Baldwin on to discuss the movie. It was quite interesting. Baldwin is pretty knowledgeable about Hollywood and Broadway history.

He mentioned that during stage runs of “Streetcar”, the actor who played Stanley and the actress who played Blanche always ended up hating each other.

Not sure if that happened with the film version, though. Great movie. There were not many better actors than Marlon Brando and Vivian Leigh.

I also like Tennessee Williams stories. I’ll be watching tonight.

I got the tape. Best role Brando ever played. A wonderful and sad movie. Look at movies today and compare—today is more the marketing of deviance and violence, while yesterday was more about the human condition.

In Brando’s autobiography he said that the casting of Vivien Leigh rebalanced the play. Because Jessica Tandy was not as strong in the B’way show, Brando completely ended up dominating the show. When it came time for the movie, the casting of Leigh changed the dynamics (she was a genuis). It was more balanced and better for the film. It is Blanche’s story, not Stanley’s. I thought it was generous of Brando to write that. And, of course, he, too, is wonderful in the movie as is Kim Hunter.

I had a real misfortune in seeing Glenn Close as Blanche (!!!) in London several years ago...
