Like clockwork: Let the iPad overheating FUD begin

“According to early user reports, the new iPad may be prone to becoming physically warm during use, especially in the lower left-hand corner when holding the iPad upright in portrait mode,” Gilbert writes. “The question of whether the iPad has a temperature problem has been asked on both the Apple Discussion Boards and in the MacRumors forums, and articles on CNET, The Next Web and Gizmodo have all brought unwanted attention to the new iPad’s heat.”

Gilbert writes, “Apple did not immediately respond to request for comment. Until then, we will continue to monitor the iPad’s hotness, both in consumer demand and physical, perhaps discomforting, warmth.”

MacDailyNews Take: Can’t compete? Spread ******** that will ultimately have no impact on Apple nor assuage the pain of your abject failure. Like Mac Cube mold lines termed “cracks,” iPod “scratches,” iPhone antennas, Chinese labor, iPhone antennas again (try and try again and fail both times), trojans misrepresented as “viruses,” etc., this is nothing more than white noise ....

>>>How about you? Any need to upgrade, and if so would you hop on the iPad2 or 3?

If you have an original iPad - the upgrade to the “3” is well worth it in terms of performance of things other than the screen... the screen is icing on the cake.

I just inherited my husband’s IPad as he just got the new one. I didn’t want it, thought I didn’t need one (I love my MacBook). However.... Suddenly I’m finding all sorts of things I can do better on the Pad. Whoda thought? Well, more time I can waste online. Drat.

I’m not crazy about the IPad keyboard, but I’m a really good typist and hate typing with a few fingers. I have been told I should get a bluetooth keyboard and then I will love my IPad even more.

Still using the original 32 Gig iPad.

Here’s what I’m running on it in terms of business apps:

Keynote: for PowerPoints.
Keynote Remote: Controls PP’s using my iPhone on the iPad wirelessly.
Mitel’s Unified Communicator Advanced: Turns my iPad into a Presence tool, voice mail, controls my status, call forwarding, etc.
Bria Softphone: Turns the iPad into a SIP phone on my corporate PBX.
ClearSea: Turns the iPad into a video conferencing tool.
SonicWall: VPN tool.
Remoter VCN: Gets me to my desktop remotely over the Sonic Wall VPN.
DocsToGo: Good enough for managing MS Office apps until I can get to my desktop over the VPN.

There are some seriously powerful business apps out there if you look for them. While the front facing camera would be handy for the conferencing apps I can’t yet justify the expense to upgrade to the latest and greatest. Not yet, anyway.

Not saying there’s anything to these reports, but the overheating stories are specific to the new ipad that just came out, not the older models. Could relate to the 4G chip, more powerful GPU, or larger battery.

Never buy an iPad as a gift to your parents:

This video is in German: The daughter asks her father if he’s getting used to his new iPad that they bought for him.

I had the original iPad. I skipped 2 but did get a 3. My original was a 32GB WiFi only. This time around I opted for 64GB WiFi/4G.

Worth it!

The extra 512MB of RAM alone is worth going to the 3. That screen is pure gravy.

Looking at my old one, it really does feel like I need glasses, which I don’t need for reading.

I beleive the area in question is the CPU/GPU area, and I’ve only noticed a slight warmth increase when charging and surfing heavily. I hadn’t even really noticed until I heard reports of it.

It just takes getting used to - and is something I’m working on :)

I’m not a teacher, but I don’t see how she can’t do all of that with the iPad. There has to be an app she can use to do the scheduling. If research is web searching she can do that on an iPad. Office will probably be out soon for it. I can do some basic Office functions with DocstoGo app.

I have been told I should get a bluetooth keyboard and then I will love my IPad even more.

I have two keypads, one with a dock and one is bluetooth. For use on my iPad 1 and iPad 2. The dock sees little use, as I have protective cases on both iPads and they need to be removed in order to dock. The bluetooth keyboard, when activated, needs to pair with the iPad. Sometimes that is a hassle.

I have found it more convenient to just use the screen keypad rather than the external keypads, which get little use. If I need to do a lot of typing, I revert to using my Macbook.

I am reading from my new iPad 3 in portrait mode and the left lower corner doesn’t feel warm to the touch.

The screen is something else, and the thing is fast, fast, fast. Also have an iPad 1 and there’s not much comparison. The new one is fun in addition to everything else.

Apple did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Translation: I wrote the story, composed an email to Apple for comments, clicked send on the email, immediately clicked get new mail, and when there was nothing there from Apple I submitted the story.
