40% of American women now earn more than their husbands. and the number is growing...fast.
How should a blue-collar husband and father react when his college-educated wife begins making twice his salary? Will ambitious women begin to want more of their mates than the men expect of themselves? In The Richer Sex, Liza Mundy draws on the latest research and the experiences of men and women across America to examine what happens when women become the breadwinners.
The big unpleasant question, Mundy says, is just how much will the tables turn? Will it be some men who wait at home to pamper a wife back from a long day in the salt mines? Some women will feel entitled to such treatment, much as some men once did, as they begin to contribute a larger share of the familys income. But just as women begin to feel that maybe it is okay to luxuriate a little bit when they get home from work, the question arises: How much luxuriating is fair? Mundy writes. Women will wonder whether they deserve perks in return for being breadwinners, and in their heart of hearts, they will answer: Yes. Yes I do.

Mundy's book claims women will be the new head of household in 25 years. Men will increasingly be the stay at home dad's. Women will be much more pickier when picking mates and place much more emphasis on the males looks and how well they take care of themselves. In affect, men will become the new "Trophy Husbands" Increasingly men may be the ones offering beauty and sexual service in return for the economic security women offer," Mundy writes.
Mundy claims there will be even less commitment by women in the future, as they no longer need a provider and get this..men will be the ones withholding sex.(not sure if I agree with this). Mundy writes women are increasingly the ones asking for sex more often with as many different partners-test driving a car so to speak.
Mundy claims men will be looking to "marry up" in the future and the social stigma of being the "kept" husband will no longer be there.
Interesting
maybe for the younger women. I fell and fractured my spine. I have been on unemployment and disability now for 2 years. No one will hire me. My husband had a nervous breakdown because of his parents both coming down with illnesses simultaneously, so we are both without incomes. However, because we are white, no one cares. I need to dye my hair and put in brown contacts and change my name to Sanchez or Garcia to get help.
I think that biological impulses will still be apparent. Most women have trouble with the idea of being with a man who earns less then they do. Many women are tolerant of a man who acts badly, if he earns a lot of money.
I can see a more polygamous society developing from this.
If I’ve learned one lesson in 40 years, it’s that when men are earning more, it’s ‘our’ money. When women are earning more it’s ‘my’ money.
There may be such a trend as stated in the article. However, any such a trend is probably an artifact of legal policies not any inherent female abilities.
Women are generally more responsible than men.
Women worry about money more than men and tend to be more money motivated.
The modern American service economy doens’t have many non-automated physically demanding jobs that can’t be done by women.
Modern trend to recruit women into jobs that have physical components that are generally better done by men, such as firefighter or police officer.
Despite all this, women will still look to marry successful men while men look to marry beautiful women. The idea that ugly rich women will be in demand from young studs is laughable. Yet you will still see beautiful young ladies marrying ugly old guys.
You can’t change human nature. Sure, there will be some changes at the margins. There have always been gigolos. But by and large, men want a beautiful woman and that serves as motivation to get the income to attract a beautiful women. Women want a rich husband and that serves as motivation to be physically attractive to attract a rich guy.
That is not going to change. But the commie libs will try to change this as they are ALWAYS trying to buck human nature and turn normal life on its head.
IMHO, you only have to look to Hollywood to see the fruit. Hollywood is loaded with beautiful, pampered women who are breadwinners and earn huge amounts of money(actresses).
The marraiges don’t seem to last, and the children are pretty messed up, even though the parents have a strong work ethic.
I think what may be skewing the numbers are the blacks. It is a very sad fact that many black women are far more educated than the average black man, and they are unwilling to put up with useless men who don’t go to school and pull their share. Are a result, many black woman can’t find a mate.
Lot more likely men will simply Go Galt and live off video games and online porn than become a “kept man” and deal with a even more demanding *itch at home.
I’m ready to be “kept”... and, I promise NEVER to use sex as a weapon to get what I want. :-)
I will be, “Ever-Ready”.
That said..... these trends are undeniable. Just look and see WHO is going to college. Hint: It’ AIN’T men.
I know numerous guys my age who make less than their wives and gf's. Myself included. Women my age seem to not care as long as the male is happy and successful in his job and is not a deadbeat or lazy.
Women are "taking charge" of nearly aspect of the relationship.I'm a male in my mid 20's and all of my friends including myself have been asked out by women, they initiated the contact. I see it every day.
I follow the wedding announcements in the paper and have noticed the trend of the wife having the higher education and better paying job.
In most marriages I am around, it’s been a see-saw as to who is the “breadwinner.”
Husband gets laid off, spends 3 years in temp/contract work before getting hired while wife keeps decent job. In this case the wife will be returning from maternity leave at the 6 month point and will try and go part time for a few years or stay at home completely and free lance to keep skills up.
Husband gets injured and is on disability for six months, has to take less physically demanding work for another six months. In the mean time, wife gets promoted. Once the husband is back full time in construction the salaries even out after a few years.
I know dozens of situations like this. They’ve been going on for years and I think this will be more common than this woman’s “trophy husband.”
Huh?! When was this? The 1800's? When I got home from "the salt mines", my wife, far from pampering me while I luxuriated, would tell me how worn out she was from taking care of the kids and cleaning the house She would then go take a long bath while I made dinner. Yeah, I'll be more than happy to turn the table, but she ain't going to like it...
I don't think they have a desire to be above their husband, the nature of the changing job market and with more women obtaining degrees than men it is just happening.
The majority of people unemployed over the last 3 years tends to be men. Women have been less hit.
Men will be obsolete the way it is going.
The parents of the young doctor are very well to do and are furious and refuse to visit their grandchild because of the domineering wife.
LOL, women are women, men are men. God wrote that blue print, commie pigs have been trying to re-arrange that for years.
Overheard at a party:
Smoothie in his dockers and loafers talking to swell looking woman in biker clothes. He askes her why, when she is hot looking and educated and makes lots more money than her ol man, just why does she hang with that Neanderthal and not someone more refined, like himself?
She looks him dead in the eye and says, “because you are NOT a Neanderthal.”
True story. Nuff said.
When are women going to break down the discrimination barriers and take on garbage collection, landscaping, and roofing jobs?
