I installed REVO Installer and then used it to uninstall Norton 360. Then downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy. But when I try to install Spybot I get the Norton 360 window not allowing me to install spybot but instead demanding I reinstall Norton 360.
How the heck do I get rid of Norton?? It's like a disease.
It may be time for a clean install.
You will need the Norton Removal Tool.
I hate norton.
I hate symantec.
They are worse than viruses.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but maybe you should stay aways from PC’s.
You seem to have a lot of trouble using them.
Have your tried the Norton Removal tool at their web site?
I had the same problem with my old system, which died right after I tried to get rid of Norton.
New system + Avast (the subscription, not the freebie version).
Has been working just as fast as the day I got it well over a year ago & i’m very happy with it.
When you uninstall in Revo, the first screen that comes up gives you four levels of uninstall options. Use last option which gives you the deepest level of cleaning including the registry.
It’s too late now for this instance, but something to keep in mind for the future.
I use avast. And it’s free. I get rid of Norton on my wife’s laptops as soon as I get them home from the store.
I personally like norton. I use norton Internet security. It barely uses any memory or processor (unlike McAfee). So it is not a hog. I previously was using avast until PC became infected.
Norton has free parental controls. And a password login vault. One license is good to up to 5 pc’s.
I just let it run and never worry about the PC becoming infected. If you don’t want to have to screw with your PC, I highly recommend norton Internet security.
I remove Norton with extreme prejudice. Get one of the free anti-viruses that don’t bloat your computer like MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) or Avast. Either of these two stick to keeping viruses off your computer. I used to love AVG until they started mimicking Norton.
Yes. Norton Removal Tool will not uninstall Norton 360. SAYS it’s uninstalled, but as soon as I try to install Spybot I get the Norton 360 error/reinstall page. Norton SUCKS!
your first istake was using and installing Norton.
if you want the low down on AV software go to AV-comparatives.org. I use ESET security suit and I have never had a problem.
Sorry to do this but, I’ve got to ask:
Are you logged in?
Goto “Run”. Enter REGEDIT. Click on Edit, then Find....Enter keyword Norton. Delete Norton Files. Continue until all Norton files are removed.
I always uninstall programs in slow mode. Seems to clear things out better. Then use CCleaner to finish the job.
I think I recommended Revo to you. But perhaps I didn’t tell you to use the deep cleaning option and then follow through with all the steps to select and delete of all the remaining bits and pieces.
There are a couple of things you can try. Go back to a restore point before you did the Revo uninstall and if the Norton program reappears, try the Revo again, using the steps that clean out the registry. It means you have to ‘select all’ when that option is given to you and then hit the delete button.
Failing that, someone on these posts gave you an instruction to working within the registry on your own.
As an aside, there is a free program called Threatfire which analyzes stuff heuristically when a program tries to change your computer. Threatfire lets you know when it occurs with the option to deny it or let it happen if you are personally downloading something you want. This type of program doesn’t wait for a virus to be spotted, analyzed and then included in a later download by your virus program like Avast.
I use both, with an occasional scan by Malware Bytes as well. You can never be too rich, too thin or too protected from malware and viruses.
I haven’t dealt w/ Nortons in some years, went to the dark side.
But back when I was running XP I tried Nortons in one of those ‘try it 30 days’ routines.
Tried to uninstall, no joy. Went through Regedit several times.
Still prompted me every time I booted up.
Finally fixed it. Format, reinstall.
Nortons is a virus IMO.
Threatfire - have not heard of it but will try it.
