I approach every election from dog catcher to POTUS exactly the same way: I vote for the best candidate on the ballot.

Rarely, I will “no-vote”. This happens more often in local elections because I don’t know much about either candidate; less often because I’m ideologically opposed to all the candidates running.

I don’t write in candidates.

Neither do I vote for a candidate I believe is less capable because the chattering classes maintain that he or she “can win”. I always vote for the candidate who is in my opinion the best choice for the job, not the most popular with other voters.

Those are my personal rules. Now for a couple examples:

1) Texas primary — Myth, Ricky and Newt are running (Ron Paul can go to hell, he’s not even a candidate IMO). I will proudly and enthusiastically vote Newt, because I believe he is the best choice. I don’t give a rat’s ass about the chatter that Santorum could beat Romney (or Romney could beat Obama). Neither Santorum nor Romney is the best choice to lead the country. Newt is the best choice.

2) Texas primary, again. Newt has dropped out. I would hold my nose and vote Santorum — I think he sucks, but there is at least daylight between him and Myth, who sucks much worse. I wouldn’t write in Newt (or Rick Perry or whatshername from Alaska).

3) POTUS election and it comes down to Barky and Myth. But Myth emerged as the winner from a vigorous convention fight that forced him to the right — and during the ensuing campaign against Barky, Myth maintained that conservative stance. I’d likely vote for Myth in this scenario.

4) Myth waltzes to the nomination, and afterwards shakes the ol’ Etch-a-sketch and runs a center-left campaign against Barky. HONESTLY I DON’T KNOW how I would vote in this scenario; maybe no vote (and stop off at Cabela’s afterwards to beef up my bug out kit).

Good question, Hope that helps, and FRegards

I respect your choices in 1 and 2. I expect your choice 4 is what will happen if Romney wins the nomination.
