Is it permissible for Moslems to listen to classical music?
Arts Journal ^ | 4/3/12 | Norman Lebrecht

Posted on 04/03/2012 4:55:03 AM PDT by Borges

The question is raised by a troubled reader of Islam Q&A, website of the Wahabi preacher Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid.

His answer is a definitive No.

The Sheikh, may Allah preserve him, inhabits the far-right of the Islamic spectrum. He is unaware, perhaps, that the Islamic states of Qatar have formed symphony orchestras, that Abu Dhabi has an opera house and that devout Moslems around the Mediterranean find nothing that offends their faith in pure music played by a well-dressed orchestra, which the questioner describes as ‘clean music, free of immoral content.’

The sheikh, though, is not to be swayed by such considerations. He declares classical music to be haraam – forbidden – a ban that applies, he says, to all musical instruments. He brings various sources to justify his ruling, and the detail is fascinating. In particular, this citation:

Ibn al-Qayyim said: If the zamr (a kind of pipe or flute),which is the least evil of musical instruments, is haraam, then what about those which are worse such as the ‘oud (a stringed instrument), tambour (drum) and yaraa’ (a reed instrument)? No one who has had the slightest whiff of knowledge should hesitate to regard them as haraam, and the least that can be said is that they are the symbol of corrupt evildoers and wine drinkers. So there are degrees of evil in music, of which the flute is the least offensive and the violin among the worst? Read the judgement in full, and let us have your thoughts – especially if you are a Moslem believer who performs or listens to classical music.

Here’s the Sheikh on his (non-haraam) youtube channel.:

Being a Wahabi gives you permission to have multiple wives, expensive cars, and preach hatred for all who aren’t wahabbi.

The Muslim faith allows you to LIE, CHEAT, STEAL, KILL, RAPE, and even deny Allah, over and over and over.

In the Quran, Allah, allegedly, says:

” Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but He will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons, on a scale of the average for the food of your families; or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom. If that is beyond your means, fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths ye have sworn. But keep to your oaths. Thus doth Allah make clear to you His signs, that ye may be grateful.” Surah 5:89

“Allah will not call you to account for thoughtlessness (vain) in your oaths, but for the intention in your hearts; and He is Oft-forgiving, Most Forbearing.” Surah 2:225

The noted Islamic commentator, Al-Tabary explained Surah 16:106 as a verse that had been revealed to Mohammed after he learned that Ammar Ibn Yasser was forced to deny his faith in Mohammed when kidnapped by the Banu Moghera tribe. Mohammed consoled Ammar by telling him, “If they turned, you turn.” (Meaning: if they again capture you, you are allowed to deny me again.)

These and similar passages from the Quran clearly reveal that Muslims’ unintentional lies are forgivable and that even their intentional lies can be absolved by performing extra duties. It is also clear that if forced to do so, Muslims can lie while under oath and can even falsely deny faith in Allah, as long as they maintain the profession of faith in their hearts.

Yes but it’s pointless. Might as well play it in a monkey cage.

Good! At least I can flee to the Opera House and be Blessedly free from looking at Burkhas and Hijabs for a few hours.

Sorry if that sounds a bit “intolerant”.

It’s no wonder so many of them are unstable, even the quotation “Music soothes the savage beast” does have some evidence in fact.

They can listen to it. But, then they’d have to go “sudden jihad” on ten infidels as pennance.

I'm curious how you think this differs in essence from Christian doctrine and particularly the Catholic doctrine of confession and absolution.

According to Christianity, God will forgive any of our sins, even rejection of him. Peter denied Christ three times on the day He died, yet Christ forgave him. Even made him the first Pope, according to some.

God will forgive any of our sins ...

Correction: He will forgive the sins of us who believe on His Son, not because we have been absolved by a priest or performed extra duties.

I did not say otherwise, though Christian groups differ on this issue.

Also, mere belief is not enough. The Bible says the demons believe and shudder.

Leviticus 27 is about what an Israelite must do if he changes his mind or is unable to fulfill a vow. Which is pretty much the issue here. Apparently the Law made it pretty much a financial issue.

“The Prophet said that Allah commanded him to destroy all the musical instruments,
idols, crosses and all the trappings of ignorance.”
Hadith Qudsi 19:5

“Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings, crucifixes, and the affair of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.”

“Song makes hypocrisy grow in the heart as water does herbage.”

“There will be peoples of my Community who will hold fornication, silk, wine, and musical instruments to be lawful ....”
— ‘Umdat al-Salik r40.0

Umdat al-Salik, the Islamic legal manual, quotes Muhammad:

Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings, crucifixes, and the affair of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.

On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will pour molten lead into the ears of whoever sits listening to a songstress. Song makes hypocrisy grow in the heart as water does herbage.

This Community will experience the swallowing up of some people by the earth, metamorphosis of some into animals, and being rained upon with stones.” Someone asked, “When will this be, O Messenger of Allah?” and he said, “When songstresses and musical instruments appear and wine is held to be lawful.”

How naughty of me!

So! If we want to drive away Muslims, we need to play recordings of dogs singing Christmas Carols.

"far-right" from the perspective of persons who have a compass up Stalin's ass, perhaps.
