Washington, D.C. (April 15, 2012) -- Best Buy yesterday revealed the locations for 42 'big box' stores it will close this year.
The CE retailer announced on March 29 that it would close 50 stories but has not disclosed until now the full list of stores that would get the ax.
Best Buy is closing the stores due to sluggish sales and shrinking profits. The company lost $1.7 billion in the last quarter, compared to a profit of $651 million in the same quarter a year ago. The store closures represent a little less than three percent of its retail force. (Best Buy has 1,450 stores in the United States.)
Best Buy says it has already closed two stores, one in Kansas City and one in Scottsdale, Arizona. Plus, one San Antonio stores and five Twin Cities stores have been notified that they will close later this year.
Yesterday, employees at the remaining 42 stores were told their stores will be closing, most by May 12.
"This was not an easy decision to make. We chose these stores carefully, and are working to ensure the impact to our employees will be as minimal as possible, while serving all customers in a convenient and satisfying way. But we also recognize the impact this news has on the people who deserve respect for the contributions they have made to our business," Best Buy said in a statement.
Here are the 42 Best Buy stores that will be closing over the next several weeks:

* notes that store was notified March 29
They lied and did not pay me a rebate so I could care less if they all close.
Perused the list with apprehension but was glad to see the two stores near my house dodged the knife this time around.
Is merchandise being sent to other stores, or will it be closed out?
Yeah, I left out the housing bust areas like parts of FL, AZ and Atlanta. That’s probably the majority of the closings.
At least they are apt to get something more in line with their needs online rather than whatever chrome-plated plastic the salesman is told to push.
How many folks are actually looking around their local business community and noting the enormous number of closed stores and shops.....(when they're not watching the Kardashians, or tweeting, of course.....)

IMHO, no loss here. Amazon can beat them hands down. And, they don’t treat you like a thief when trying to exit the store. The ones here in Georgia are noted for virtually frisking the customers on the way out. I wouldn’t buy a damned thing from them.
Yeah, thats "my" best buy store. That area, (Lehigh Acres, North Fort Myers) was devastated by the housing downturn. Surprised any businesses made it through.
Why? In my experience, Best Buy is an expensive place to shop. I can get a 32 GB memory stick for what they'd charge for a 4 or 8 gb one at Frys. I guess I don't tend to buy big ticket items there. Most of the time, when I have to get something at a Best Buy, it is something small, like a cable, memory, or something similar for a perpheral. They are always on the high end price wise for such things. i,e, $30 for a cable I can get for $10 to $15 elsewhere.
Bingo! Best Buy is just a handy place for internet shoppers to get hands on experience with products that they intend to buy online. Sad but true. When I go in to look at something, I always check online with my iPhone to see what the price difference is, if it is nominal, I go ahead and pick it up, but if it is substantial then I go home and order it online.
I did that a few years ago. Here's why. I researched the TV I wanted (reviews, specs, etc) both online and at the stores. Best Buy had an online ad for "buy a tv and get 3 Blurays" for free or a very low cost. I went into the store and asked them to give me that offer and free shipping. I was willing to pay a few dollars more to get the TV now. They said go talk to customer service which had a huge line. I already knew what TV I was buying so I wasn't going to waste my time waiting in a huge line with no guarantees and walked out the door and ordered it from Amazon.
For $50 they lost a sale and coincidentally that store is on the closing list above. I mainly buy just BluRays if the sale price is good. The bonus is when I can also use a coupon which Disney offers from time to time.
The other day I was looking for some Sony 3D Glasses, I went in to the local BB, and was told to go on line and find them.
