Were Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis In Love? (Oh, Brother)
Village Voice ^ | Thu., Apr. 19 201 | Michael Musto

Way before Adam Sandler did wacky comedy movies opposite himself, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were the reigning goofball team of 1950s cinema. Well, I just dug up a book about the singer/shticker duo by Arthur Marx (son of Groucho), and it points to some real affection that lurked beneath the animosity that ultimately broke them up.

Martin and Lewis, asserts Marx, had "the kind of chemistry that makes for a real love affair."

"The feelings the two of them had for each other during the early days of their romance," he writes, "no doubt stemmed from nothing more than the usual 'latent homosexuality' that psychiatrists claim exists between all close friends of the same sex."

But Marx quotes a source close to the duo saying that this partnership was based on a real infatuation.

"Everything Jerry did was either to amuse or please Dean," he swears. He adds that Jerry craved a laugh from Dean even more than he wanted it from the audience.

The source also says that some of the sketches Jerry wrote for the duo to perform "had a mild homosexual flavor to them"--like one in which Jerry was hurt when, after he cooked a big meal for Dino, the crooner dissed him to go play golf.

"Jerry was always the 'wife' or 'girlfriend' in those situations," writes Marx.

It's so sweet that a Jew and an Italian with fake names could be so deeply, intricately bonded.

Unfortunately, there was one person Jerry Lewis loved even more than Dean Martin, and that was Jerry Lewis!

End of relationship!

And while we’re at it, every time I hear the term “man crush” used I almost want to gag.

homosexuals only have one word for love, that word is sex. (the verb)

They have no brain capacity beyond that.

Arthur’s a good writer. It’s not homosexuality here but a desperate need to be liked by the cool guy. I never found Jerry Lewis to be a nice person.

Agape - Unconditional Love
Eros - Passionate love
Philia - Friendship
Storge - Affection

The Greeks understood that Love came in more than one form. If Martin and Lewis “loved” each other, it should be not surprising or all that “interesting”.

I swear our society now operates at the level of Fourth Grade.

I remember seeing Arthur Marx on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow show back in the 70's when that book came out. The book seemed to be particularly critical of Lewis. Snyder had Jerry on a few weeks later, and he refuted the entire book.

Well said - If everything is to be reduced to sex then the world is much poorer for it. Is it any wonder young men nowdays don’t know how to be close to each other - they are all afraid of what it might lead too.

Don’t put “crotch” and “fixed” in the same sentence unless you are talking about a domestic pet.

One of my Aunts worked as a personal assistant for Jerry Lewis for a number of years. She would confirm that statement.

Agape - Unconditional Love, Eros - Passionate love, Philia - Friendship, Storge - Affection

The Greeks understood that Love came in more than one form.

The sodomite cannot help but see everything through his corrupting filter. It's disgusting. ("Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieveing is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled." (Titus 1:15))

You need to read D.A.Carson ("Exegetical Fallacies") or Moises Silva ("Biblical Words and Their Meaning: An Introduction to Lexical Semantics") to correct the simplistic (and fallacious) approach to the meaning of words typified by C.S. Lewis' work "The Four Loves", specifically "agape".

[agape](noun) and [agapo](verb) do not exhibit the narrow unmarked meaning so stated: "unconditional love". [agape/agapo], like the English word "love", can carry a wide variety of related meanings, the specific which can only be determined from context. One wonders why Paul went to such great lengths in 1 Corinthians 13 to explain what [agape] means, if its meaning was so narrow (unconditional love). It also raises other problemmatic questions--did the Greek lexicon already possess a word which precisely embraced God's (God Almighty/Jehova/JesusChrist) love? Hardly, Paul was revealing a sense of love previously little understood.

"Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love [agapate] the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets." (Luke 11:43) -- always "unconditional love"? Clearly not.

My parents met Dino at The Latin Quarter. He bought a round for their table and brought Jerry Vale over to meet my mother because her name is Stella.
Jerry Lewis didn’t leave the hotel room.
