A 27-year old woman on her first hang gliding trip died after slipping out of her harness shortly after takeoff from Woodside Mountain in British Columbia, Canada. Lenami Godinez reportedly fell 1,000 feet after desperately trying to hang on to the instructor’s feet. Miss Godinez and her boyfriend had hired a professional instructor to take them soaring on Saturday.

Dying from a fall like that has to be one of the worst ways to die, assuming that you’re actually conscious while falling. To know that near-certain death is imminent, with few ways to avoid it, and to watch as the ground rises to meet your speeding body...does anyone know if people black out under such circumstances, or what other perceptions they feel?

The tandem pilot will never live this down, and will probably be sued into oblivion. But, it was his fault, he apparently did not pre flight her harness to make sure her legs were in the loops.

I have heard of tandem skydiving passengers also falling out of their harness. What a horrible way to go.

They do not black out, it is terror all the way to death.
At least with a skydiver who has a malfunctioning parachute they are busy trying to remedy the situation.

My second parachute jump was from a static line. I had released the harness from it's strap, which goes through the legs. Without that being secure, I fell out of my harness. No reserve, because it's attached to the rigging.

At opening shock, I felt the harness begin to slide away in one one thousandth of a second. I reflexedly extended my arms, catching ahold of the loop of rigging which normally encircles my legs. As the enormity of what just about killing me, I wasn't ready to land on the ground. My right ankle was just slightly inclined to midline. It snapped and broke. However, I consider my broken ankle an example of divine mercy to this very day.

More info here.”

I went to the link. The first line in the article reads:

“A hang-gliding instructor is accused of swallowing a memory card that may have recorded the lead-up to the moment a woman slipped to her death.”

Hmmm. My thought is to put him is a cell with a bucket for a toilet until it re-emerges. Feed him lots of fiber and this too shall pass.
