A baby boys visit to the Oregon Zoo in Portland has given the world a new viral video thats hard to look away from. As the boy smiles for Moms video phone, a lion behind the glass sees the kid as a snack, apparently, trying in vain to chomp through the glass.
Its rather disturbing. And then Mom kind of laughs, a little nervously.
Her trust of the glass installers is stronger than mine would have been.
Heres what KGW-TV in Portland reported:
The one-year old, named Jack, is dressed in a striped jacket that looked a little like a zebra and the lioness is quite intrigued. In fact, she appears to be trying to take a swipe at him.
But of course, the thick glass between the lion and the little boy protects him from any harm.
He looked like a tasty baby zebra, (his mom, Heather) said. We just thought it was hilarious.

My grandchildren remain wary.

At least the kid wasn’t paying any attention to the lion. Prolly would have freaked the kid for life if he was watching. Monster nightmares for sure.
Parents think this is funny? They area pane of glass away from Darwin Award.
People today have no concept of danger any more. Just like the idiot parents where I live who use their strollers as potential airbags when the y lean into the streets on a red light.
On the one hand you are correct, but we place our lives in things like this all the time. When you fly in a jet at 30,000 you are inches from falling 30,000 feet. When you drive your car on a 2 lane highway you are one simple little arm jerk away from a head on with a semi truck. Car doors are a lot scarier to fly open than that glass is to break.
I live in a tourist town and see that a hundred times every summer. Push the stroller out in the street to get cars to stop and let them cross. This is also a retirement town so a lot of residents are sliding into dementia too. But they still drive until something forces them to give up their licenses.
This has been on the news here a couple of nights (with new videos, etc.). Another video shows the kid looking at the lion and then goes back to looking at the floor/camera.
The mom said she would have grabbed him if he had become upset or anything. And it wasn’t until a friend commented that the kid had a “zebra” shirt on that the mom noticed that.
I don’t see the big deal, other than a pretty cool video of an amazing animal. (How come they are always sleeping when I go to the zoo!?) And the glass at all of these zoos has been around a long time - why are others just starting to worry about them breaking now?
Oh, and I’m guessing that the lion couldn’t read the “Don’t Tap on the Glass” sign.
Thick glass or not, I think most mothers in that situation would have run over and picked the kid up. Maternal instinct, maybe.
“And the glass at all of these zoos has been around a long time - why are others just starting to worry about them breaking now?”
Perhaps because more people are now more aware of zoo animals escaping their enclosures than they were in previous years.
Global warming weakens the glass.
