William Cassano was dusting himself off after being thrown 30 feet by a car moments earlier as he pushed his stalled SUV to the shoulder of Route 70 in Brick.
"Dude, are you OK?! Are you OK?!" asked Anthony Smith, a good Samaritan pizza deliveryman, also from Brick, who stopped to help Cassano on Thursday night.
"Yes, yes," Cassano replied in a soft voice, Smith recounted.
Moments later, Cassano was hit by another car — and this time there was no miracle escape

Something similar happened to a high school classmate of mine, she’d run off the shoulder of the road, overcorrected and rolled the car. She reportedly struggled to get out of the vehicle, with the driver side door being on the ground. She managed to get the passenger door open, jumped off the car to the road, and was struck and killed. Such a bright, pretty girl, too, with a coveted scholarship to a great university ahead of her, all gone in the confused aftermath of a moment’s inattention behind the wheel.
We had an accident here on Route 21 in NJ where kids in a jeep were in an accident in the fast lane; some were thrown into the opposing fast lane (over the median) and were killed by cars there.
Tragic; I don’t think they were using belts.

Unless the Jeep broke apart from an impact, they weren’t. I resent the law forcing me to use the shoulder harness and lap belt, but having witnessed a few serious accidents and having been involved in one personally, I don’t take the car out of Park without using them. Things happen so fast, the force is something you don’t understand until you’ve been there. I recall the odd thoughts going through my mind during the whole slow motion thing, thinking how soft cars are, like crumpling a beer can. I walked away with a chipped tooth, a cracked sternum and felt as if I’d been beaten with a baseball bat for over a week, very sore.
I know rules are rules, but his headline was less confusing than the one NJ.com wrote. At first, I thought the driver was delivering bricks, not from Brick, NJ.
Tragic for all involved, including the witness, Anthony Smith.
You never get over seeing something like that happen.
The jeep was intact; they simply sailed out of it.
I’m such a nerd I’ve always worn my belt (I didn’t really start driving until I was already 21); when I was younger a friend worked at a tow yard where they brought in all kinds of wrecks, and it had an impact on me. I’ve been in jeeps with no top or doors on, and for the life of me couldn’t imagine why someone wouldn’t wear a belt especially in a jeep.
There was a time in my life when I racked up a lot of miles behind the wheel of a company car, prior to being promoted and racking up frequent flyer miles, lol. I’ve seen a few things, they stick with you. As beautiful as some of them are and as fun as they can no doubt be, you’ll never see me on a street bike. The only fatality I’ve ever witnessed was due to a motorcyclist and a tractor-trailer colliding.
Here in northern NJ there is simply too much traffic and too many horrible drivers to enjoy a motorcycle (or even a stick shift); there is something Darwinian at work in more rural areas north & west that seems to keep bad drivers off the road. I’ve never had an interest in motorcycles (I’d feel naked/unprotected on one), and our climate here really isn’t ideal for them; I remember often seeing them under overpasses during rainfall.
Maybe in a drier climate with less obstacles they’d be fun, but you are still fairly unprotected.
They’re popular toys here, weekend warriors playing biker. Summer isn’t high season because of bugs, I understand they hurt at highway speeds. During fall, warm winter days and spring, they’re out in force. The Blue Rdge Parkway is a very popular destination for them, and they like to take the scenic route, the long way around, which runs them right through the little outer suburban town I call home.

I’m quite relaxed, thanks. I actually enjoy seeing and hearing them, some are beautiful machines. You’ll just never see me on one, I don’t particularly fancy being rolled into a lifeless ball by a semi.
I’m 52 and i can say with all honesty i feel safer on a bike than i do in an enclosed vehicle, wish i could explain it but i really can’t.
Both drivers were killed, I stopped and spoke with the State Trooper.
There's a reason they're called "Donorcycles."
The whole crotch rocket mentality, with bizarrely excessive speeds for public roadways, has a lot to do with it. Combine that with poor visibility to the point that other drivers pull out without the motorcycle visually registering, and you have a recipe for serious injury or death.
If you want the rush of high speeds, in any sort of vehicle, join a club with access to a track. Don’t do it on public roads, more lives than your own are at stake.
