HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) - He told police he wanted to pretend he was a race-car driver. The problem is police think he was very drunk when he drove onto a horse track in Hobbs and started doing laps.

It wasn't an average call that the Hobbs Police Department responded to just after 1 a.m. Friday.

"Nothing like this has happened," Hobbs Officer Mike Stone said. "The casino's been open for several years, and we've never had this type of issue there before."

Police said Martin McDonald, 28, of Fort Worth, Texas, broke through a gate at the Zia Park Casino and drove his pickup onto its horse racing track.

"He told a couple of the officers that he just thought it would be fun to go out there on the track and drive like he was in NASCAR," said Stone.

Better the race track than the public street for this drunk.

I can just hear the announcer now. It’s driving while drunk ahead by 20 lengths but here comes local law enforcement on the inside. And down the stretch they go. It’s a photo finish at the local jail as local law enforcement corrals driving while drunk.

The cops dash-cam video is the highlight of the story. Once arrested, in passed out in back of the police car.

I try to watch that video later tonight. It didn’t load the first time.

Back in 1982 we used to sneak into a short asphalt track in Nashville in the middle of the night and run our cars around a few times. I had a 1974 BMW 2002 that I thought was pretty hot sh!t at the time and it took a few laps one night.

I went back the next day when it was light and I was sober and couldn’t believe what I had done. That track had/has some serious banks.

Now the race is on
and here comes pride in the backstretch
Heartaches goin’ to the inside
My tears are holdin’ back
They’re tryin’ not to fall
My heart’s out of the runnin’
True love’s scratched for another’s sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches
and the winner loses all

Before they closed Ontario Motor Speedway and built on the surrounding parking lots (which were covered in gravel), I would take my car there and do doughnuts around the lot. Now I wonder what caused all those nicks on my car's paint?

In Montana I would go to the mall after a snowfall and have fun spinning circles around the big parking lot.

I went there once in the 70’s to see an all day concert.
