Google Chrome world’s most popular browser

The Internet king is dead, or at least has to share the crown.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, the web browser leader since the Netscape coup (circa 1995), has been surpassed globally by Google’s Chrome browser, according to recent numbers from StatCounter.com. There’s a good write-up at PC Magazine.

Chrome now make up about 33 percent of web traffic, a percentage point or two over IE. Firefox has about 24 percent of the market.

It is quite a change from a year ago, when Google only had a 20 percent share, IE 45 percent. Since then, Chrome has been on a tear: IE has dipped quite a bit and Firefox, largely funded by Google revenues, has remained fairly stable.

Chrome surpassed Firefox to become the No. 2 browser in December.

IE still reigns supreme in North America, however, 38 percent to about 24 percent, but Chrome is gaining ground there too.

This is funny because people using Google Chrome have the most problems accessing our business’ website.

“Firefox, largely funded by Google revenues...”

Really? I didn’t know that.

I moved to firefox several years ago and tried Google Chrome when it came out. I tried it again a few months ago. I still use Firefox. I honestly don’t know anyone that uses Chrome, but hey, I’m in IT. I still know people that use IE.

Is this because of the browsers built into android phones? I’m having trouble believing this stat.

I've been using Chrome for about a year. I only switch to IE when I have no choice. I suppose I would use Firefox more if it didn't take 10 seconds to load.

I can't say for sure why I like Chrome better than the others. I guess it's an aggregate of factors including speed and function.

‘More than likely it’s due to Chrome being bundled with a billion other programs. Same with IE.

I tried Chrome, but didn’t really care for it.

I will say that on my old WinXP, it would play videos that other browsers would not play, due to newer video codecs and player versions.

It did load a lot of crap and had an insufferable interface that couldn’t be altered.

I still prefer Firefox because of several productivity add-ons. I admit that FF’s recent rapid release is one of the most insane things any company has ever done. I will be glad when they work that out of their system.

Comodo Dragon browser is supposed to be based on Chrome. I have considered trying it, but haven’t yet.

They bid for it.
Google bought a service from Firefox and they get LOTS of cash for it.

“Yesterday Techcrunch reported Google has outbid all other search engines to ensure they remain the default search engine and homepage for Firefox users for at least the next 3 years. The total amount comes to about $180 Million Dollars for 3 years and will account for at least 85% of Mozilla’s funding.”

from here
http://www.shoemoney.com/2008/08/29/would-firefox-exist-without-google-funding

That being said, I don’t trust Google. I have Bing as my search function and use IXQuick for anything I don’t want people to see. Yahoo is set as my homepage just for the mail and to give me some cred if someone is looking. I don’t use their search.

With Ghostery and Firefox, I’m pretty well invisible. I don’t get ads or videos on most streaming sites.

What is interesting is that “Google Anyalytics” is blocked here on FR. So Firefox is trying to use it, but I have it blocked.

Total BS. I run a site with more than 1,000,000 US visitors per year and a significant amount of foreign traffic.

Last month top 5:

Internet Explorer 45%
Safari 21%
Firefox 17%
Chrome 11%
Android Browser 5%

Maybe there are more Chrome installs (via packaging with other software installers) but Chrome is certainly not the most used.

Chrome is faster. But I am not happy with google’s data-collection-on-you paradigm... and suspect we will find out they’ve been spying on the users of Chrome, at some point.

This is the break down for varmintal.com this month to date. I don't agree with the numbers in the article.

That was my thought, too. People are forced to have Chrome if they get droid. IOW, people are not leaving IE or Firefox.

Informative post.

Is IXquick almost as good as Google for searching. Good to know that they don't spy on you as Google does. Google turned over all their info to the communist government of China and will ours when China takes over.

If you have Android 4.0, you have the option of using Chrome. It is not compatable with previous version of Android and is not installed on my phone runing Android 4.0.

>>Is IXquick almost as good as Google for searching.<<

What I have found is that when it comes to conservative political subjects, nothing beats IXQuick. No one wants to be tracked so conservatives and libertarians use it. Therefore your hits will deliver what you want.

For silly things, Google is still number one, but Bing is a close second. My husband used Google, I refuse to. Even for silly things like Hello Kitty or movies, I use Bing and it works great. The biggest problem with Bing is their “safe” filters. I had them set “High” and still got some nude pictures.
I have my kids use Google because they are doing schoolwork and looking up Harry Potter or Avengers. It’s safe for them and gives us a cover from our IP address in case anyone is looking.

I figured it would look weird if we NEVER used Google.
