Seriously do you realize how idiotic your statement is? Of course people are invested in their own lives. They use Facebook to share things with their friends and family just like they used to do with snailmail letters then telegrams and then phonecalls and then with e-mail and now with Facebook

This is what I use FB for. I have family and friends who live out of state and many miles away from me and I enjoy seeing pictures and video clips that they share with their family and friends. I agree that some people post TMI or inane stupid stuff on FB but I can easily ignore that just as I do the email chain letters my SIL feels she has to send me a couple of times a week.. And I’ve gotten back in touch with two old friends, one from high school who I lost track of many years ago and am so glad I did. I’ve also gotten “friend” requests from two people I’d much rather not communicate with anymore and easily ignored them. I also “unfreinded” a teenaged great nephew whose posts were riddled with obscenities and drug use references and I let him and his parents know exactly why I did so.

FB, just like any other electronic media or even old school media like snail mail, post cards, telephone calls, is all in how you use it or choose not use it.

Yep it can be a Social Platform to share with friends and family or a powerful marketing tool for people who wish to market their own wares. And one doesn't get in the way of the other.
