Philip Phillips wins 'American Idol' (Season 11)

This year’s “American Idol” is Phillip Phillips, the 20-year old from Leesburg, Georgia, who seemed to have had a lock on the title at, well, hello.

He’s been compared to Dave Matthews and some critics have said he had the advantage of a female-voting-base, but his performance of “We’ve Got Tonight” last week, and “Home” last night proved his voice and talent as an artist might have a little something to do with it as well.

It was a star-studded and sequin-heavy finale at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles with performances by Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, John Fogerty, Chaka Khan and Reba McEntire. There was an amazing duet between Jessica Sanchez and Jennifer Holliday. But the highlight of the evening, the performance fans have waited for for two years, was Aerosmith, singing “Legendary Child” and “Walk This Way.” Even Ryan Seacrest seemed giddy.

The jacked-up folks over at votefortheworst.com are claiming another victory again this year, with this guy, who they call WGWG#5 - White Guy With Guitar # 5. They have quite a fan base and they all know how to use automatic dialers.

As they were quick to point out, Jessica Sanchez didn’t have a chance because “she has a vagina”. The frauen vote en mass every year for the cute white guy with a guitar, regardless of whether they can sing or not. When you combine their vote with the tweenies, it’s almost impossible for anything but a WGWG winning.

Last year they picked Scotty McWhaterehisnameis, and couldn’t believe it win the dorky kid won. I stopped watching years ago, tired of the blatant manipulation and seeing how easily they could shape the vote by pimping contestants with comments, backstory, song choice, staging, etc. It’s a classic example of why the country is in the state it’s in - people are just that easy to manipulate.

Saw this coming last night. I'm unclear as to how the so-called "winning songs" are chosen, whether by the singer, the producer, or judges, but Jessica's was HORRIBLE, his was actually (IMHO) great.

As far as sheer talent is concerned, I feel this was the best year yet, though I must admit I almost wrote AI off this season, and probably won't watch next year. I'm burned out on AI, X-Factor, The Voice, the whole lame pack of 'em.

As a former Country DJ, I'm proud that Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Scotty McCreary, Lauren Alaina, and Skylar Laine are all gonna have more successful careers than all the rest of 'em combined.

I had Philip picked a while back, too. I think the judges praising the heck out of Joshua and Jessica... you can tell they want an “ethnic” winner soooooo bad.... didn’t help them at all. In fact, I think it turns people off.

I think Philip is more “marketable.” I liken his voice to those of Matthew Sweet and that lead singer for ColdPlay. They do great sales-wise. Why not.

Jessica does nothing for me. I’ve heard hundreds of other singers just like her. Big whoop. Joshua sounds like a half-dozen other singers. I guess he doesn’t impress me especially with being very “churchy style” with voice. I don’t care for all of the added flair and affectations. Just sing normal, please.

Don’t you hate when that happens...I had someone on facebook last night announce the DWTS winner while I was watching the show...Sure spoiled the surprise and at that point I wasn’t as interested in watching the rest of the show...I try to stay away from news sites on results night, but I forgot not to go to Facebook.

Id say the oppposite. I bet Jessica hardly sells anything at all. Totally mediocre voice for recording and live performance, unless she gets major voice lessons. She can hit a couple nice notes but has no range and screams too much. Phillip will sell a lot of records and tickets if he gets the right music.

Somebody on FR called it Ghetto Yodeling and I sure hate when they do that but the judges seem to love it.

I am glad he won. But man...there were a lot of women screamers tonight. That Grammy winning black lady looked like she was possesed yelling out her song! Yikes!

That is a problem with too many women singers these days, they think they have to nearly scream or be really loud in general. It may have something to do with the feminist movement. Once in a while it may be called for in a certain kind of song for a particular effect, but not so much of the time. I don't like it at all.

Jennifer Holiday is a legend. One of the most incredible voices of our time. She was in the original Broadway version of DREAMGIRLS, and she belted out that now legendary Song “And I am Telling You” which she sange tonight. I have never heard anyone even come close to her, not even Jennifer Hudson, until Jessica Sanchez sang tonight. The problem with Jessica is that she’s only 16, so it’s just difficult buying the emotion of the songs...But boy, she can sing. It’s actually better to come in second on Idol..you still have a great career with out be saddled with that oppressive American Idol contract.

The think I don’t understand is they always wait a long time before releasing the albums of the winners..by that time the fever has died. It never fails. Meanwhile, the runners up get their music out quickly and generally last longer. I propose that will happen in this case as well.

They scream because of the feminist movement? You really wanna stand by that ridiculous comment?

“I thought Josh should have won, but the voting base is little girls, so what do you expect?”

Yes, hubby and I agree with you.

Hubby actually said that he personally likes Phillips’ music style best, but still thinks Josh should have won.

But, it is true that many who do not actually win end up being the most successful.

I said, "it may have something to do with the feminist movement". The feminist movement wants women to be very assertive and in your face. They do not like soft spoken femininity. On the whole, they want women masculine and aggressive. Yes, the loudness and belting out many lines does remind me of the feminist movement's influence. If you think that ridiculous, you can, but I wonder, what it is to you?

Fact is that, Phillip is just an adequate singer, the likes of which can be found on Subway stops all over NYCity and other big towns.

Perhaps - like Dylan was an adequate singer, or Cocker, or Janis, or Willie or Johnny Cash...Sometimes the inner talent and presence make "adequate" singers into icons. I think Phillip, while not having the greatest "pipes", has the potential to become iconic.

I loved the fact that he wrote and sang his own stuff for the finale. His genuine humility moved me to tears..I think he was the right choice. I will buy his first CD on principal.
