The 2012 San Diego County Fair presented by Albertsons|Sav-on traditionally features fantastic food – introducing one-of-a-kind taste sensations that you just can’t miss.

This year, Chicken Charlie, the King of Deep-Fry and one of the Fair’s longtime food trend-setters, is going to debut Deep Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly along with Deep Fried Cereal. Chicken Charlie will also offer Deep Fried Pork Chops!

A new food booth from Chicken Charlie, The Pineapple Express, will feature Maui Chicken Sliders, Pineapple House Shrimp over rice, Pineapple Shrimp cocktail bowl and a Pineapple Fruit Bowl – all served in a hollowed-out pineapple.

The Del Mar Diner is about to serve up some fantastic new treats. Remember the powdered orange-flavored drink, Tang? It’s always been “Out Of This World” since NASA used the drink during the space program in the 1960s. The Del Mar Diner will give Fairgoers a chance to sample Deep Fried Tang.

Also featured will be tangy Buffalo Chicken Sliders, Chicken Fried Steak on a Stick and Deep Fried Chili Asteroids. Or, perhaps you’d want to try Flying Saucer Sopes? For dessert, the Del Mar Diner has Pie Fries (deep-fried pie crust strips) with strawberry preserves dipping sauce.

At Bacon-A-Fair, it’s all about bacon. Be sure to taste “Meat Lovers Hot Dog on a Stick.” That’s a deep-fried, beer-battered, bacon-wrapped hot dog. Also featured will be “Baconshrooms,” (deep-fried, bacon-wrapped mushrooms) the “Caveman Turkey Club,” (one pound of bacon wrapped around an extra large turkey leg) and “Manly Gourmet” (two pieces of bacon wrapped around sausage stuffed with mushrooms and smoked mozzarella). Try a “Half-Pound Meat-On-Meat Dog,” (half-pound all-beef dog wrapped in a quarter-pound of bacon) the “Porky Poppers” (bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapeños) or the Porkabello Kabob (bacon wrapped Gouda stuffed portabello on a stick).

Reno’s Fish n’ Chips will feature “Beach Fries,” which is a plate of French fries drizzled with a yogurt fish-taco sauce, topped with salsa. Reno’s will also offer Deep Fried Green Beans and Sweet Potato Tater Tots.

Rose’s Food Introduces “Tostilocos,” a popular Mexican street food. Tostilocos are a boat of Tostitos chips topped with just about any ingredient you can imagine. One of the most popular versions of Tostilocos features a mash-up of cucumbers, jicama, peanuts, pickled pork rinds, with a squeeze of lime, topped with hot sauce.

The Funnel Cake Express will introduce a tempting Red Velvet Funnel Cake. Pignotti’s Pasta will offer Bacon Pasta, and Bread Bowls filled with pasta or antipasto salad.

The Lobster Shack will serve steamed lobster tails, fresh from Maine, and Gingerbread House will offer Cookie Dough on a Stick.

The Grinders sandwich stand is back. They’ll serve freshly made hot sandwiches, most notably their famous Pastrami. For the real pastrami fans – don’t miss Grinders’ Pastrami-topped French Fries. Also on their menu is Hot Turkey Dip (with sweet cranberry chutney) and French Dip sandwiches.

Also new at the Fair this year — “The Big Rib” — 1 1/2 pounds of juicy beef at the end of a bare bone rib – it’s being described as the “ultimate food on a stick.”

The summer of 2012 will take San Diego County Fair fans “Out Of This World” to the stars, planets and beyond. Every day at the Fair will be filled with discovery and mystery of the outer limits. The Fair will explore man’s history and fascination with space and space travel starting with the ancient astronomers, to the NASA program and the future of space exploration.

Is anyone out there? The Theme exhibit will delve into the unexplained and unexplored. Enter the realm of science fiction, UFOs and other evidence of life beyond earth. Universe Invited!

The 2012 San Diego County Fair will run for 24 days opening Friday, June 8, to Wednesday, July 4. The Fair will be closed Mondays except July 2.

Gates open daily at 11 a.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, and Monday, July 2; 10 a.m., Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesday, July 4. Admission is $13 for adults; $7 for ages 6-12 and 62 and older; free for ages 5 and younger.

This fair is presented by Albertson’s/Sav-on Drug Store.

When I think of Sav-on, it reminds me of when I was a kid some 60 years ago, they had the best hand dipped ice cream cones ever. 2 dips for a dime.

Can’t imagine why I’d have horrid visions of Hussein after reading about a Half-Pound Meat-On-Meat Dog.

They can deep fry TANG now?

If they’ve gotten this far, they’re not far off from being able to deep fry complete abstractions. Soon you’ll be able to get deep fried virtue, deep fried angst, deep fried post-structural literary theory — all on a stick — at these fairs.

Deep Fried Chili Asteroids.

I'll bet you can't get these in France.
