Fossil Fuels.
When are we going to stop using this false description of anaerobic oil?
General Knowledge verses historical (mis-knowledge)

biomass is correct. It also depends upon how deep that biomass is. If it is relatively shallow (1-2) miles (?) it forms into coal. When it goes down to the interface with the molten core of the earth it becomes oil.
At least that is how I understand it.
(But I could be wrong.} I don’t think there is a scientist anywhere on earth that “KNOWS” exactly the constraints and the physics of this matter of energy conversion.

I am sorry about the definition I gave. That was the OLD definition and I often slip into that mode.
The new term (and more accurate definition/description) is aerobic AND anaerobic - not biotic and abiotic.
Science changes definitions from time to time and I got stuck in the 1960’s in my descriptions.
Sorry Bout dat.
My bad. (circa 2010 lingo)

You are (more or less) correct.
Biomass conversion depends upon depth, temperature and possibly other factors.
Scientists try to define it but even they disagree on most aspects.
Therefor - the confusion.
Guess only God knows for sure.

When I was in the sixth grade, my teacher was giving us a lesson on how coal is formed from dead plants and animals. Now it happened that my grandfather had a coal pile from wehich he lugged chunks to the fireplace in his house. I had seen patterns of ferns and such when busting the bigger chunks into ones small enough for him to carry in his bucket, so I carried a nice fern pattern to school and raised my hand when science class began. My question to the teacher was, “If the decayed plants and animals madke the coal, why is there a nicely preserved fern in this lump of coal?” I got in trouble for asking because the teacher (happened to be a cousin on my grandfather’s side) had no idea how to answer that one. I of course, being the smarty pants I was, had already decided that the coal had been oil before it solidified into coal, so when it was oil the plant fell intot eh ‘tar’ and got preserved until the tar went solid. At 67 this summer, I’m still convinced that’s the answer.

I tend to use the same the older descriptions.
I don’t really understand using aerobic since the process takes place without the presence of air. When oxygen is present, the hydrocarbons degrade over time into CO2, H2O and some similar products.
cheers.

That’s why ‘experiential’ knowledge is better than ‘conferred’ knowledge.

On earth, when the organic debris remains in contact with sufficient oxygen, it eventually goes to the lowest energy state, carbon dioxide, water, sulfur dioxide, etc. When sediment at the bottom of the lake/ocean cover over and bury the organics away from a source of oxygen, we get hydrocarbons. The more thermally mature our sediment rock becomes (heat and time factors) the lighter (smaller) our hydrocarbons become. Natural Gas is found in greater percentages than oil in the more thermally mature fields. Yes, but simple and obvious facts are just not as cute as this.

I dont really understand using aerobic since the process takes place without the presence of air. When oxygen is present, the hydrocarbons degrade over time into CO2, H2O and some similar productsThe newest discoveries are oxygen free because they are so deep and also the hardest to get to. Just ask BP. They panicked when their cap wasn't strong enough but they did have a solution that would (and did work) if not not all that well, it would with modifications and that was to put a tent (funnel) over the leak and let that blow to the surface where they would pump it into a tanker and then skim the oil off the top and filter the sludge and water off the bottom.
Next time they will pore a much heavier cap and be prepared to utilize the technique of separating oil and water in a tanker set up.

I was not clear. None of the process, claimed or otherwise, use oxygen or air to create the hydrocarbon reservoir.
All petroleum deposits are found in sedimentary basins, material laid down from the surface but trapped without a source of oxygen as the sediment builds up.

Not True
All petroleum deposits are found in sedimentary basins, material laid down from the surface but trapped without a source of oxygen as the sediment builds up.
Scientists have supposedly determined that a VERY large quantity of Really Deep reservoirs (and Really Large reservoirs) are created deep in the earth's core and they can't really determine the exact process but it is other than that created from decay materials derived from living plants.
It has been noted that what they are just now discovering deep (really, really) deep down is about as pure as refined oil and not the sludge that we are used to pulling out of the earth 0-1-2 miles down.
Because nobody is absolutely sure how it forms they don't reference or try and make sweeping statements about this new (LARGE)(MASSIVE) source(s) of superfine oil down 4 - 5 and 5 plus miles deep.
We will have to wait until someone finds a good technique to extract this oil safely and then analyze it's makeup to determine just how it formed in the first place.
They know it exists.
They don't know how to safely get at it.
and
These scientists aren't exactly sure of it's molecular structure
BUT
They have small samples and it appears to be almost pure oil which would require minimal refining to convert to gasoline.
We will just have to wait and see.
To: jongaltsr
Good luck with that wishful thinking.
Those of us the work in the industry will just keep on producing the oil as found in the sedimentary basins.
Cheers.

WE DO APPRECIATE YOUR WORK.!!! The trouble is that (you) are hindered by politics and WE the citizens suffer by paying high prices for your product (WHILE) you also suffer by not being employed consistently and continually get bad press.
Thank you Mr Obama (Osama Obama) and all of your liberal minions/lackeys.
