"Berlin Wall" Speech - President Reagan's Address at the Brandenburg Gate - 6/12/87

We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

Back then, we thought we had Communism on the run. Now it looks like we have Communism in the White House.

Wasn’t it great to have a President who actually stood up to the bad guys while building up our economy back home?

When the Soviets deployed SS-20 IRBMs to Eastern Europe, Reagan responded by deploying Pershing II IRBMs and Gryphon cruise missiles to Western Europe.

Reagan NEVER backed down to Soviet aggression.

A plug for our film “Rockin’ the Wall” (www.rockinthewallstudios.com) in which the Gipper makes a timely and important appearance.

We were fortunate enough to be at “the Wall” in February after it fell.

I’ll never forget the East German soldiers with their ties, uniforms untied, sitting back, relaxed, up on the wall, smoking their cigarettes and total relief.

And the people, streaming out of the gates, clutching their one suitcase, frantic to get OUT of that place, for the first time in how many years ...

Socialism/communism imprisons people. No one EVER wants to “get in.” They always want OUT.

Reagan literally let these people out of a hellatious prison. He let our country out of one, too.

Now we’re slowly turning back into a prison ourselves, the gates are closing behind us, and we’re losing our freedoms.

We need another Reagan — or we have to be Reagans ourselves and STAND UP to this persistent evil in our world.

Some of the rockers we interviewed played in East Berlin two weeks earlier. Their story in the movie is fantastic. Very uplifting.

I don't mean to seem disagreeable, but there's no "looks like" about it: we have a communist in the White House.

The title you created " 25th Anniversary Of President Reagan's Brandenburg Gate Speech. "Tear Down This Wall". " did not match the source you linked and had to be changed. Please use published titles only.

Thank you.

This was the greatest single line, in the greatest speech by the greatest president of my lifetime.

WJC was supposed to be a great speaker and will be forever known for “I did not have sex with that woman”

BHO at this point may be remembered for “The private sector is doing fine”.

Really in all seriousness, Obama is a great speaker like a hypnotist is, his words may soothe you (if you are a left wing idiot) but after an hour try to remember a thing he said.

“Obama is a great speaker like a hynotist is”

That about sums it up.. and the audience has to be childlike in its naive trust in him to allow itself to be hypnotized.

The only speech I ever watched of his in full was the “victory” speech when he won the Iowa caucuses in January 2008. Truly bored the **** out of me. It was all about himself, mixed in with some mundane noise about “being the change you seek.” It was a real headscratcher for me as to what the idiots in the crowds were so excited about.

I realized later it must`ve been as you describe.. a hypnotic trance-like response to his appearance, his voice or some other aspect of him they were craving. It all became some weird emotional bond. Cults of personality up until then tended to be a foreign dynamic, so I found it very strange and rather disturbing to see it take shape in America . I guess that`s what happens when the populace doesn`t trouble itself with the tedium of researching issues and coming to understand why they matter. I`m fervently hoping the scales fall from their eyes this time around.
