It's a knucklebone. It apparently came from Jerusalem in a marble reliquary box with the name of John the Baptist inscribed on it. We must all remember, me most of all: reading the article is our friend.

That would probably be in Rome or Venice. When the Crusaders sacked Constantinople they brought back THREE HEADS of John the Baptist.
