I doubt there was a livable cottage on the property in 1960-1961, apparently the records showed an outbuilding without a ceiling when a freeper contacted the local authority and reported back on one of the long threads, (don’t ask me to find it again) I am going by memory. There was no record of a cottage.
I notice there’s either an ‘r’ or an ‘h’ in front of every residential street number. All those properties could NOT have had a rear dwelling. The letters must stand for something like ‘resident’ or ‘householder’ as has been explained me once or twice. ‘Householder’ standing for the HEAD of the household, and resident for everyone else living there.

The biographer offers that the Dunhams shared the house with the family Stanley Armour was working for, he maintains he spoke to their daughter. The name PRATT is the same as his listed employer. Anyone able to look through a Polk for that period would probably find PRATT listed at that address, by looking under ‘P’ - correct?

REMENISCENCES showed a number of letters written by people who were students that knew him, who socialized with him, and not one of them mentioned he was married or had a child...in Hawaii.

Interesting that the Pratt daughter had no memory of a child, but she seems to recall a 'daughter' - could that have been the Ann S Obama shown in the Polk?

So now we have six people living in that house if the Pratt family only had one daughter...and Ann S Obama enrolled at the U of WA for Fall, 1960.

But what we do not know, is was Ann S Obama the woman the kenyan is seen with at the Nachnannofs, and the girl whom Abercrombie knew as Ann, and was it she who was enrolled at the university...?

There were four people who arrived in Hawaii in that same year of 1959, and I’m sure it was just coincidental...Abercrombie and the student Barbara Nelson, she who wrote the baby’s name on a table napkin, he to attend the University of Hawaii with the kenyan...she became zero’s teacher much later - both from Buffalo; Stanley Armour who left Seattle before ‘SAD graduated and Madelyn waited’ and the kenyan student who had absolutely nothing to do with the airlift, who landed in Hawaii a good month before the first contingent of foreign students landed at Idlewild in September 1959, to be met by Cora Weiss and Malcom X.

And then, so many years later, Cora goes on the record to say that she sent the kenyan money from the AASF, for which she held the purse-strings. All that Mboya did was select the students, and he obviously did NOT select the Luo we are familiar with.

The kenyan doesn’t mention the AASF as sponsors. The first on the list of his sponsors is the Laubach Soc., for which we know Elizabeth Mooney worked.

As a script no producer would touch it. More twists and turns than a nest of garter-snakes.

I’ve done genealogy for years. The “h” stands for head of household and the “r” is resident. Stanley being the head of the house and Madelyn, the wife, is residing in his house. You have to remember the times back then.

Whether they actually lived there, I don’t know as I wasn’t there. However, I doubt very much the bouncing bundle ever spent a day there.

thanks, that’s what I recall being told about the directory entries. ‘h’ is for head of household and ‘r’ is for resident, and it’s fairly obvious, because if all those entries with an ‘r’ were to stand for ‘rear’ then Honolulu would be full of little bungalows...every residential property would have one.

I’ve often wondered if Ambercrombie did in fact find something, it’s possible Ann S Obama had a child in Hawaii and took off shortly there-after. Abercrombie might very well have discovered an entry for the child of Ann/Anna but the birthdate would be all wrong, and the name of the mother might have forced him to slam the lid down on Pandora’s Box and say nothing.

Glad when people get pictures and screen caps. The more it’s out there, the better so that more voting citizens have the information.

Just a reminder to folks. Just because someone isn’t listed doesn’t mean they weren’t there. They may not have had their name listed on the electric bill or phone or whatever. Students and renters would fall into this category. Also, if someone was renting a room within the owners’ home or a cabin out back especially if the utilities were inclusive. Sometimes they are listed at two different addresses or cities because they may have moved at the time the info was being gathered or students would still be listed with their parents. It’s the same with the US Census that just because they aren’t listed doesn’t mean they weren’t there. It’s the accumulation of like information that brings us the true picture.

That MIL house is only slightly over 400 sq ft TOTAL. I do not know what year the “cottage” was built, but the interior sq footage is very cramped. Such structures are often built for the widowed in-law to live in. The cottage should have it’s own postal address if used as a rental.

Zillow is not the most reliable. Go directly to the Oahu County Assessors site. There was a detached garage and a porch unceiled shed attached to the house. It says there are 4 bedrooms and 1440 sq ft. That is a very small house for having 4 bedrooms. Click on the various links on the left to find out more details.
