Does It Matter If the Heroine of 'Brave' Is Gay?
The Atlantic ^ | June 26, 2012 | Chris Heller

Merida, the heroine of Pixar's Brave, doesn't want to marry. Not now, she repeatedly tells her mother, Queen Elinor, and perhaps not ever. Faced with the prospect of being forced to wed one of a trio of loutish suitors, she runs away from home in search of some way to change the "fate" she was born into. That's the radical thing about Brave: Merida is a Disney princess who doesn't want a prince.

She also happens to be a tomboy, a tough and sporty archer who would rather be riding her horse than wearing a dress. On Sunday, Entertainment Weekly's Adam Markovitz used these details to draw a connection between Brave—which racked up $66 million over the weekend—and another event in the news:

Sounds like "Beauty and the Beast", where Belle didn't want anything to do with Gaston.

Or one of a 100 other movies.

I agree. Just because a heroine is not interested in being married off to someone she doesn’t like/love... and is athletic/”tom-boyish” doesn’t make her a lesbian. In fact, if people hold the definition of a lesbian as a female who is independent/strong/self reliant/athletic etc... than a whole lot of female FReepers would fit that definition.

Three times I’ve seen professed “lesbians” willing to “go straight” for the right man.

What 'kind' of man is the 'right' man for a lesbian?

re: “Merida is not some kind of lesbian icon; she far more resembles self-sufficient (and normal) conservative women.”

Totally agree.

Have a look at the absolute war the homo ‘community’ has created over the My Little Pony cartoon...specifically the character “Rainbow Dash’.

If there is a freeper grad student wishing to get a Nobel in psychiatry, do a thesis on that mess. It would blow your mind.

As a youngster I was such a tomboy. I had brothers, so most of my play time was male oriented. Climbing trees, racing, playing ball, riding bikes, mowing the yard, riding the horses. I hated “house” work. Still do, but I sure love men.

The world would probably be a lot better off, if everyone just took things for what they are, instead of reading their stuff into everything.

Interesting to note that you are a step further along the path to wisdom than you may have realized when you opined that it would be nice to have a companion ... for dinner now and then. It is the internal desire to have that opposite sex companionship which God builds into the healthy, and which will not just go away because the societal engineers wish it to be gone. Let the spark of longing build, and grow in grace and knowledge. Men and women complete/complement each other.

...instead of reading their stuff into everything.

Or, as another poster quoted a famous psychotherapist in another thread today, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I also concur with the sentiment of others here about how irritating it is that such a small slice of the population seems to be driving the discussion because of their choice on how they use their genitalia. Quite tiresome...

It made $66M in the first weekend, which is not good for a film that took $185M to make. Not horrible, but not impressively profitable. "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" also did badly.

I grew up with three brothers and played rough just like you did. I love sports and fish every Summer. I really don’t like the “twisting” of what defines a “straight” female. For example, I wish I was more adventurous... I want to be Salamander when I grow up. LOL!!

Too many activist homosexuals can't think above the waist and and see sexuality in everything. It's a symptom of their infantile navel-gazing.
