dictionaries ad nauseam | 28 June 2012 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 06/28/2012 4:41:50 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

subitize \SOO-bi-tahyz\, verb
To perceive at a glance the number of items presented.

Example sentences:
Below seven the subjects were said to subitize; above seven they were said to estimate.
-- H. Gutfreund and G. Toulouse, Biology and Computation: A Physicist's Choice

I wanted to see if Pedro could subitize, so I asked, “Pedro, how many stars are in the first circle?”
-- Melissa Conklin, It Makes Sense!

Etymology:
Subitize comes from the Latin word subitāre which meant "to appear suddenly".

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

ARE YOU KIDDING? IF THIS DOESN’T MOBILIZE PEOPLE TO VOTE AGAINST HIM, NOTHING WILL.

oh so you are joining the Anti_RINO, anti-romney, not voting for another one jack@$$es this november? I don’t think that Roberts is not a conservative, if anything i think this paints him as a venial, concerned about his own image and legacy, small man. Rather than be considered a hyper-partisan he threw his lot in with the left.

i agree with you. there was a danger that a ruling in our favor might have ameliorated some of the anger against him. this, if anything, will fan the flames. he wants to crow and preen about this victory? ok, you take it, Obams, and you wear this around your neck like a shiny medal. I don’t think the populace’s opinion has changed a whit on Obamacare and when the economy sinks even further as a result of this decision, he will have to wear that too.

Roberts is a failure and a disgrace. His name will be written in history as a tyrant’s sycophant.

I suggest the GOP (for lack of a better vehicle) repeal this monstrosity and replace it with the most ridiculous taxes in pursuit of every social good that they desire.

Start with gun ownership. Gun ownership helps reduce crime. Everyone who does not have a firearm should be taxed.

Follow this principle that Congress’s power to tax is unlimited and not restrained by the enumerated powers until the SCOTUS has no recourse other than to rescind this ruling. And Robert resigns in shame.

well the ball-less wonders are incapable of something on that scale, but hopefully they can repeal it.

Went walking with my neighbor. She is adamant that ObamaCare is righteous. She is the pastoral assistant at my church. Yep, happy slappy herself. Her daughter was in a serious car accident, her boyfriend died in it. She had tons of health care bills. Her car insurance did not cover it all, but they managed to get her on their health plan. She wants ObamaCare believing that it will provide HC for her daughter. Fool. Now they must continue to pay her insurance on their plan or their daughter will be taxed even further into poverty. She lives at home since the accident, has no car to get to work. She car pools. Life is tough, but this insanity will now tax her further under. Her college education has not provided a job that will get her out of poverty due to the economy. I just shook my head in disbelief.

Additionally, she started in on the greed of capitalists. I was dumbfounded. Reminded her that greed is one of the 7 deadly sins and will always be with us, but we can’t throw away our whole system due to that. She wants total socialism. FOOL.

And she votes. 4 votes in that house. Fools all of them. He is a postal worker, btw. Union and pensioned. Their kids will pay for that for generations to come.

Yes, and in a stunning reversal of normal protocol, the IRS will be empowered to approach any residence and if you simply show them your gun, they will go away. Otherwise, you face severe tax evasion penalties.

And coveting your neighbor’s goods is one of the top ten, even if you devise an entire system of gov’t around that notion.

i am to the point where i loathe and am as resentful of the Freepers who continue to rag on Romney as the anti_Christ as i am the Dem senate staffers who screamed out “it’s constitutional, B!TCHE$!” and “take that MFers!” after the ruling was read. They are of a piece, in my mind.

Yes, they all suck. The only thing we can do at this point is win an election.

I’ve been looking at the dissents a little bit. I’m not sure at all why the court has ruled that something that is not allowed by the Commerce clause is allowed because of the taxing power. Did anyone make any effort to explain that? Or put forth a principle about exactly what limits exist?

Am I the only one looking at this as a motivating factor to get republican voters out en masse on Election Day to vote these creeps out? I refuse to pout and whine. Let’s fix this!
