Alleged Gang Member, 15, Charged With Murdering Baby While He Lay In Father’s Arms

COMPTON A 15-year-old boy will be arraigned Friday morning on murder charges in the fatal shooting of an infant boy while he lay in his father’s arms outside a South Los Angeles home.

Police arrested Donald Ray Dokins Wednesday after he allegedly shot 1-year-old Angel Cortez, according to the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office.

Mauro Cortez was reportedly standing outside of a house, holding his baby Angel, in the 105000 block of South Hikory Street on June 4, police reported.

Cortez told police a teen boy rode up on a bicycle, fired several shots at him with a handgun and then sped away.

Investigators say the murder was a gang-motivated shooting. They believe Dokins shot Cortez because he was wearing a purple shirt, a color associated with a gang in the area. Cortez is not a gang member, according to Deputy District Attorney Kenneth E. Lynch.

Authorities offered a $200,000 reward for information leading to the killer. Tips allegedly led detectives to Dokins, who has been charged with one count of murder, with the allegation that it was a gang murder, and one count of attempted murder of the infant’s father, Mauro Cortez. The charges were filed in adult court.

Prosecutors said that Dokins faces numerous life sentences if convicted

I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t one of his fellow bangers who snitched him out. They don’t need the kind of heat this type of incident invariably brings down on them until an arrest is made.

I'm afraid things have reached a tipping point in certain tribal areas of your republic.

I think the only way out is a massive culling of the unproductive elements of society.

The bright side is that Donald Dokins can now no longer be sentenced to life without parole thanks to a recent SCOTUS ruling.

Leaving aside the fact that he shot an infant to death, he's probably just a good kid who made some bad choices.

When he gets out of prison, I'm sure he'll have lots of good things to contribute to the community.

Story is unclear.

Was the father shot also, or just his son?

Who was wearing the purple shirt?

"They believe Dokins shot Cortez because he was wearing a purple shirt, a color associated with a gang in the area. "

Not that it in any way excuses what happened, but why would someone who lives in an area where certain colours represent a local gang wear that colour, especially when they have kids? Was he new to the area or something?

In that neighborhood, there is probably no color that doesn’t represent a gang.

A few years ago I took a day tour of Rio,a breathtakingly beautiful city.During the tour we were driving up a small mountain (it's a very hilly region) and the guide brought our attention to a large cluster of shacks on a nearby hillside. She said it was a "favela"...which is basically a slum..and that that one was so dangerous that the Brazilian *Army* doesn't dare try to enter it during the *daytime*.

That's exactly the way I think of Compton...just one huge "no go" area...24/7.

It is long past time that Posse Comitatis was suspended, the marines were sent in and these dogs were put the hell down!

How is it we can clean up Bagdad, but let wild dogs run loose in our own cities!

It is long past time to stop worrying about the damn allegations of racism, and go in and put these animals down, so that people can live their lives in peace.

Yes, that’s it.. blame the victim.

Why should a american not be allowed to wear a particular color shirt on the porch of his own home??????

Send in the damned marines and put these dogs down!!!! Enough is enough.

After the election, if things go well, they are all going to move to Canada.

Ummm, no thank you. We actually have an immigration policy and we are tightening up on that.

Not saying he deserved what happened, but its kind of like women who dress like sluts in a sleazy bar, or people who decide to get out of their car in a bad neighbourhood and go for a stroll whilst they leave the door open and the keys in the ignition. It doesn’t give lowlifes the right or an excuse to victimise you, but you still have to use common sense and realise that doing certain things in the wrong place at the wrong time can have adverse consequences...

My aunt grew up in Compton. She said it was a nice place to grow up, although when she was about 16, it got hit pretty hard by the Long Beach Earthquake.
