Sure wish we could get another presidential candidate of the same caliber as President Ronald Reagan.

Start the music indeed.

Go, Fourth!

The Fourth of July is a birthday event,
Of fireworks, parades, and a testament,
That an idea shared is a nation’s prize,
More than churches, and battles, and history’s lies.

Americans all wave the flag on the Fourth,
From the West to the East, and the South to the North,
For a day at least, we can stand together,
Like the stands we took in the worst of weather.

It’s all the bad times that have made us all strong,
Not the smug apprehension that we did no wrong.
Mistakes have occurred and we’ve learned from the pain,
So we’ll stand up again knowing what’s there to gain.

As the Flag marches by on this Fourth of July,
With a pang in your heart and a tear in your eye,
Link arms with your brothers, and stand for the pledge,
And be glad for their strength for we stand at the edge.

The world need not fear us, for we pose no threat,
And the best of our being they haven’t seen yet,
America rising in awesome display,
Is a reason for gladness, O World, on this day!

I'm working on it.

It's quiet around here. But it isn't too quiet.

"Well, sounds just about perfect then!"

It's getting closer.

Quiet, Please!

I’d like to have some quiet, Please!
That gives more than a moment’s ease.
A silence that assumes control,
And satisfies a troubled soul.

When nightbirds keep their voices low,
And crickets creep upon tiptoe,
When even shadows stay quite still,
And breezes are afraid to spill.

I’d like the sound that someone hears,
Of coursing bloodflow in his ears.
The quiet of the grave, almost,
Without a noisy, wailing ghost.

The roaring of the parkway stilled,
And stillness upon silence build,
The Summer lightning staying dark,
And lovers quiet in the park.

I know what noise is, what it does,
But I forgot what silence was.
If I could have some quiet, Please,
Perhaps at last, I’ll catch those Zees.

Fireworks And Freedom

July 4, 2012

Thanks to the ingenuity of our Chinese friends, we here in the US celebrate our independence this month with massive displays of colorful fireworks.

Every year when we sing our national anthem and enjoy the vibrant patterns created by “bombs bursting in air,” I remind myself that most bombs are deadly, not beautiful like the fireworks display. Although both use similar ingredients, one is intended to kill; the other to entertain. In this metaphor we see an example of how something can be used for both good and evil. In the hands of capable, careful, and caring people, something dangerous becomes glorious. But the opposite is also true.

Freedom—the very thing we celebrate with fireworks—can also be used for good and evil. As believers in Christ, we are free from the restrictive Mosaic law, but the Bible warns us not to use our spiritual freedom for selfish purposes: “Do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Gal. 5:13).

Not everyone has political and religious freedom, but all believers in Christ have spiritual freedom. We must not use it as a weapon to impose our will on others but to display the glory of God’s will.

Free from the law—O happy condition!
Jesus hath bled, and there is remission;
Cursed by the law and bruised by the fall,
Grace hath redeemed us once for all. —Bliss
Freedom doesn’t give us the right to do what we please, but to do what pleases God.

Read: Galatians 5:1-14

For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. —Galatians 5:13

Psalms 120-123
