(NYT) The Taming of the Stooge - Iggy Pop Isn’t Ready to Give Up the Carnal Life
NY Times ^ | June 29, 2012 | ANDREW GOLDMAN

Q: I saw you perform in Portland, Me., back in the ’80s when you opened for the Pretenders. I had never experienced anything like it. You actually licked my hand. A: I was just really happy to be in Maine — I’m a travel enthusiast. And I’m glad I got away with a lick. But those were pretty mainstream shows. It was an introduction to another part of the American public. I remember there was one gig on that tour at Penn State, and it looked just like “Children of the Corn” — these penetrating blue Anglo-Saxon eyes staring at me from beneath identical corncob-colored crew cuts.

Q:From what I understand, you’d be energized by an unreceptive audience. A:Exactly. All I really have on my mind before I go out there is: I’m going to try to kill them. What some people would call antics, I would just call a good show...

Q: Many date the birth of punk rock to a show the Stooges played in London in 1972, which was seen by founding members of the Clash and the Sex Pistols. What did you think when the punks started releasing music a few years later?

A: I reacted to it better than I had to the hippie thing. As it developed, I couldn’t stand the sincere punks. I never believed them. Still don’t.

Q: The sincere punks?

A: Like the Clash were going to make the world politically correct for everybody’s benefit — but only if you kept buying Clash records. I never really went for the righteousness. I went more for the profligate, sneering groups. I also realized that it was good that I wasn’t doing that sort of music anymore...

She looked at me penetratingly. So I suppose you can figure out what happened next.

The first time I heard “Lust for Life” on a Carnival Cruise commercial I almost passed out.

As a guy who played for a lot of bands and looked up from my drum kit one day while playing CB’s only to see IGGY up against the stage and grooving our tunes, I can say categorically that “SELLOUT” isn’t in this guy or his bands vocabulary.

Ha! Same here. I wondered if Carnival knew what they were playing.

Iggy is the man. He’s had a hard life; I think without the drug issues he could have been even bigger, but he remains the man, nonetheless.

One of my fav Iggy vids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4hPnZUMBwA.

My late husband was from Dexter, MI and used to hear all the bands from the Detroit area. He would dance around like Iggy and I’d think he was nuts.

Maybe some of the chemicals permanently preserved him.
