6 Ways to Sunday:If Romney should be elected President, just where & how- will he take the Oath?
The Green Papers ^ | July 4, 2012 | by Richard E. Berg-Andersson

Should former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney- the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, as of this typing- be elected President by defeating the incumbent Democrat in the White House- President Barack Obama- he will face an historic dilemma: just where (as well as under what circumstances) will he be able to take the Oath of Office come Noon Eastern Time US [1700 GMT] next 20 January?

The problem is that, in 2013, 20 January falls on a Sunday and, therefore, the public Presidential Inauguaration festivities (the Swearing-In on the steps of the West Front of the United States Capitol followed by the Inaugural Address; then the Inaugural Parade up Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House-- not also to mention all those Inaugural Balls!) will have to be postponed until Monday 21 January this time round. Exacerbating this problem is the fact that, should Romney, indeed, become President as a result of the 2012 Election, he will not only have overcome the current occupant of the White House, he will also be of the opposite Major Party from that occupant!

Only six times before in the History of the American Presidency has the day set aside for the beginning of the Term of Office of a President (as well as Vice-President) of the United States fallen on a Sunday and none of the previous times this has happened provides all that much of a guide for what to do re: the swearing-in of a potential Romney Administration the day before a public Presidential Inauguration.

The source of the problem:

From a quick search I cannot learn why the Jan 20 swearing should be a private ceremony.

Romney would take the oath at noon on Sunday in the Rotunda, like Reagan did to begin his second term.

There is no problem with taking the oath privately on a Sunday. Many Christians do not believe in holding secular festivities; parades, parties, etc., on a Sunday.

He will take it on the Book of Mormon, in Salt Lake City, privately administered by justice Roberts.

Maybe a question of equal importance is: Will Roberts be able to administer the oath this time without screwing up?

20th Amendment
Section 1. The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin.

Ok....kick Obama out of our house at 1/2013 @ 12:01

Romney takes a private oath on Sunday and a public one on Monday

I don’t see the big deal here as long as that usurper fraud poser POS is gone...

As long as Romney takes the Oath in a country that he is loyal to, it will be a huge step up from that terrible day in January, 2009. Perhaps in some odd sense, Obama is “loyal” to the America he wants to create, but Romney is a real American both culturally and by birth. As much as I despise Romney’s politics, the liberal from MA will be a huge step up from our current national nightmare.

Well, this is not even like the NYC Mayor being sworn in at midnight on New year’s day before public ceremony at city Hall at noon. with this media age it has to be shown. live . and even a small address to the nation and the world will be necessary.

will President Barack Kardashian sneak out the back door that Sunday morning? nah.

Actually I want to see it. I need to see it. I do not need a parade etc. Step up, take the oath, address the country and the world. get to work. The Inaugural balls can still occur.

Have a State of the Union Address within 10 days.

He apparently used a Bible in Boston as was traditional for Massachusetts’ governors, so why wouldn’t he follow D.C. tradition?

It was meant as a kinda sarcastic reference to the supposition that the closed-door oath Obama did was on the koran.
i don't see a whole lot of difference in Obama and Romney, so at this point another closed-door/secret inauguration would be unsurprising.

The 20th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States notes- in its first Section- that "[t]he terms of the President and Vice-President shall end at noon on the twentieth day of January... and the terms of their successors shall then begin.."

A bigger question is does the Obama family leave the White House and hang-out elsewhere (Blair House?) until the ceremony is over on Monday afternoon? It's clear to me that the nuclear football and all other responsibilities would be Romney's at noon on Sunday.

I want to see US marshals, five seconds after Romney completes the oath, slap handcuffs on Obama and hustle him away to a cell.
