Dark.. please don’t fall into the dark shadows..

I have been on PCs since before DOS existed.. been through many OSs.. these childish cat-fights push people away from other OSs..

Mac is a faggy OS.. Windows is a Lazy OS.. Unix/Linux is a Geek OS... ... ... crap.. where would I go?! :/

(Both MS and Mac) are Liberal/socialist/communist supporters... .. well, leaves me one place to go.. Linux..

BUT.. prob is, most people today have NO idea how to run it (I will say that it IS getting better)... but there are so many levels to understand the difference (not to mention HOW to upgrade.. run the things we need on MS)..

I am actually starting to get pissed off thinking bout it.. fan-boy this.. fan-boy that...

Just jump in here and help us sometimes, and things will go much smoother.. Stop calling people n00bs.. stop talking like you are the king (not direct to you Dark)..

I remember the days when I had control of all of my ‘friends’.. I was the only one who knew DOS in my town (NOT a programming language.. but an operating system)..

I mean.. how technical do we need to get to prove our point.. yet confuse the majority of the computer users?

I will ALWAYS hate Mac (and this goes back to the Commodore/AMIGA wars in the 80s)..
They will always hate MS... and neither will give in to Linux unless there is something that gets their attention.

I think the major hold-back now is that the majority of the Linux ‘gurus’ love their position of ‘KNOWLEDGE’... and are about 90% jerks... and love to show it :/
They present ‘helpful’ info.. but it is only ‘helpful’ to those that already know.. or at least partially understand Linux.. heck Unix was much easier than this...

Dark, I am in NO way accusing any FReepers of this.. but this is what I have observed since I have gotten serious with Linux. I tried it out 12 years ago.. didn’t like .. 10 years ago.. didn’t like it.. 4 (or so) years ago.. didn’t like it. FINALLY.. about 3-4 months ago, I liked it.. and try to (re)learn it... but the ‘guru’ side of it is very DISTASTEFUL. :/

I HIGHLY respect you and all the other FReepers.. but sometimes, maybe, there would be much better tech support here than on (even specific) Linux forums..

Take care all, and I meant no disrespect :) Long live FR and our republic (and screw the fag corporations)

I liked XP, and Se7en.
I detest Vista and Win8 reminds me of the fiasco that was Microsoft Bob.
I’ll move to Se7en and wait it out for a better OS than 8 to come along.

I see your point about the Linux “gurus”. Still I don’t know how you fundamentally change the culture. Highly technical fields or communities are probably always going to be that way to some extent. Communities of classic car restorers, or of ancient Greek translators, or of AutoCad users. I don’t know it seems like some of this stuff is unavoidable.

I think a lot of the message boards try to maintain at least a civil tone - I frequent fedoraforum.org for example and I see more civility than not. Maybe not of warm and fuzzies but no open flame wars either.

There sort of will always be a disconnect between the experienced user that insists that a questioner RTFM before posing a question and a relatively inexperienced user who maybe tried to RTFM but couldn’t make sense of it because - well because man pages are basically impossible to read until you’ve been dealing with this stuff for a pretty long while.

But I don’t think that the model is fundamentally broken - I simply think that the linux community will figure it out. For example I don’t use Ubuntu but when I go to Ubuntu websites I see way more instructions in the form of graphical sequence of steps than I might see for other distros. Eventually, I think the right levels of support will evolve if the demand is there - everything from N00b to expert.

“I will ALWAYS hate Mac...”

I hate to say it, but I have to agree with you. I wanted a Mac a few years ago, even drooled over a few keyboards. But when the iBad came out they went all Dr Evil on us. Now they are obsessed with locking up everything. I will never rely on a system that I cannot control what software is on it. Sad... they have made such strides against Windows!

“sometimes, maybe, there would be much better tech support here than on (even specific) Linux forums..”

Maybe the Freeper Linux users need to start our own tag, used just for tech support, like ‘linuxsupport’ ?

By the way, on your Mint Maya thread last week I recommended two low-resource Linux window managers, Awesome-WM and Xmonad, but said they were difficult to work with. Scratch that! I saw this discussion the other day on Hacker News and made a mental note to give you the link:

goomwwm: Get out of my way, Window Manager
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4214800

The posters give a lot of links to Linux window managers I’ve never heard of. This one — http://i3-wm.org/ — looks AWESOME and much easier to work with. Enjoy!
