“I didn’t know “a NY minute” was allowed in TX?”

This little donkey is very cosmopolitan! She is a real sweetheart!

Probably living anywhere these days, that’s good advice.

I regularly hear them at night. My neighbors have a Great Pyranees which protects their free range chickens and goats. Since they are about 25 acres away from me...I don’t get much benefit from that.

I have chickens and of course cannot free range them. Their chicken yard has fence wire across the whole top. Otherwise, the owls and hawks would have had them in no time. But...I did have to hire a guy to come out and remove 2 chicken snakes from my nesting boxes, one was 6 feet long. They feasted on my hen’s eggs.

In spite of and because of the wild life...I do love living out here in the country. You name it...its here, from foxes, raccoons, possums, snakes, turtles, deer, coyotes, bob cats, wild boars, squirrels, rabbits, turtles, frogs, toads, lizards, skinks, etc. For a couple of years we even had a ‘puma’ ranging the area. The vet says the bears are back, but have seen no trace of them.

I do have to respect the wild animals’ territory where I live-the rules are different here-an off-leash dog outside your fence will get you a fine upwards of $500.00. If it is bothering someone else’s livestock, it is a dead dog. Pets are not put first here-if they are outside the fence, they are a casualty, period.

There are only 2 other people living on this 1/2 mile road, and the nearest “town” (it has 900 people) is over 20 miles away. Most of the townies who moved out here are gone, and most of us are glad-we were tired of them tripping through the forest in their Birkenstocks, feeding the wildlife their leftovers (and their loose pets) endangering everyone by doing so.

We don’t have bears here, but I know that some people in places that do feed them, and leave out trash at night. Enviro loons do that with the predators here-so, hell yes they lose their fear of humans. The feral hogs in particular are huge-can easily be 300 lbs and many are larger-and probably the most dangerous critter out here-they are very aggressive.

Anyone who really wants to live here needs to keep pets in, fence the property, don’t put out trash cans until trash pickup time. And don’t walk in the woods unarmed and unaware-it is a wild place, not a city park-otherwise, you may trip over a rattlesnake or run into a pack of those wild hogs, either of which can kill you rather quickly.

The mountain lion is not a nice kitty-avoid them-they are protected, but if one kills or maims you a game warden will hunt it and put it down-but that is small satisfaction-better to keep your head about you when in the woods-do not run, or throw food scraps. If I see cat tracks, I hold out my arms to look bigger, sing or yell loudly while waving my walking stick and walk backwards out of that trail. And keep my loaded sidearm and pepper spray within easy reach.

Once, after seeing mountain lion tracks, I backed down a trail singing “Dirty Deeds” as loudly as I could and was heard by another hiker on a nearby trail, but that is another story...

I do miss E TX. Snakes and all. It was a little piece of Heaven, our 2.5 acres.

This part of Wisconsin is very hilly and it makes a great home for a variety of animals who want to keep out of human sight as much as possible. And since I live out in a semi-rural area next to farms and a river, I keep my eyes peeled. I know bears have gone through my neighborhood and my wife and I hear coyotes howling (squealing?) every now and then. But you are correct: people have to be aware of where they live and make sure they realize the possible dangers.

I had heard people say they saw coyotes in Houston but I had my doubts even though cats disappeared a lot. Then I saw one in Tanglewood about 1/4 miles west of the West Loop 610, not far from my house. It was 1pm the coyote was sprinting toward Buffalo Bayou. I hear yapping sometimes at night but have only heard them howling in south Texas. My next door neighbor saw one come through the fence from my back yard into his before it turned around and ran.
