NCAA limits scholarships in 2 ways... the total number AND the max number of NEW scholarships that you can give in any year.
So I’m guessing that PSU’s total scholarships are to be reduced by 20 total, AND the number of new scholarships that they can give each year is reduced by 10.

But Penn State toon steps after the facts came out. SMU never did any corrective action.
Plus, SMU wasn’t a traditional north eastern school. They always get the breaks. SMU was an upstart and the traditional power schools wanted them out. Of course, they were also paying briefcases of cash to players.

Giving SMU the death penalty didn’t put too many companies out of business here in Dallas. Getting rid of PSU Football would put a lot of companies out of business, and I am not certain that these penalties won’t have the same effect. But that probably was a consideration when deciding on the Death Penalty.
More like a University run NGO (with high salaries and expenses and such), it sounds like. Spanier could easily be appointed to run it.
Why should the people of Pennsylvania and State Penn students pay the fine instead of the actual perps and enablers?
One would hope that this degenerate gets his comeuppance in the near future. But the legal process does grind slowly.
I wonder if the coaches are going to hang around after this, I know I wouldn’t. But certainly they did have to know something was going to happen when they took the job.
That conservative covered up a crime for 13 years. Beyond that it’s not the NCAA’s job to police sexuality or administer the criminal law but to enforce their bylaws. I am just saddened by how many people try and defend the AD at PSU for this. If Sandusky was just a teacher and JoePa knew nothing about it then you would have a point. But the facts of the case is that the athletic department and JoePa actively covered this up to protect their image, to protect their jobs and to protect Joe’s wins. Sorry but this may be too light in my opinion.
If the taxpayers pay the fine maybe they will realize that state universities shouldn’t exist to provide taxpayer funded minor leagues for the NFL and the NBA.
I am sure this would come out of TV revenue, ticket sales and not any taxpayers wallets.
The closest parallel I see, and granted what happened at PSU was much worse, was what happened to OU after Switzer was forced out, they were pretty bad for a couple of years...but at least OU had a tradition even before Switzer they could draw on, and eventually they were able to rise again.
The problem with Penn State is, before Paterno, they were nothing, he’s all they had, and now that’s gone.

We may never know what could have happened, but I suspect that PSU would challenge the legality of the NCAA Death Penalty had it been levied. I understand a team has to be on NCAA probation for that to be the punishment. Even with all that the current penalty is very harsh.
It’ll be interesting to see if the NCAA can make the monetary fines ‘stick’.
Well considering the university already signed the consent papers agreeing to all fines and penalties, they will definitely stick.

...Which is roughly the penalty USC was given. The way that’s handled is gray shirting, medical redshirts, and academic casualties. The last two of players who surprisingly wouldn’t have contributed much anyway.
With D1 FB being a copycat league, and SEC schools using roster manipulation tactics like those above, the NCAA essentially pushed PSU into the new world of college FB.
Looks like the penalties are really the bowl games and the cash.
What TV revenue? PSU is on Bowl probation.
We don't know what the Big Ten might do, but it's conceivable that PSU may not be featured on the Big Ten Channel for a similar period, meaning that PSU will not realize any TV appearances for a long time. They might still get a 1/12th split of the Big Ten Channel revenues, however. Not sure that anything short of kicking them out of the conference can change that.
The Mountain West Conference is looking for teams.

Punishing the school seems to be the wrong approach.
Initially, I would have thought so. Until the students rioted in support of Paterno. Then it became obvious that something was really wrong with the school itself.
Where does the NCAA get its jurisdiction and power?
It is a voluntary organization, and its members agree to abide by its rules and decisions regarding membership and membership qualifications. PSU is free to withdraw from the NCAA if it wants.

Again, the school community itself appears to be a major enabler. People actually thought there should still be a statue of Paterno on campus, for goodness' sake.
