Paterno’s huge mistake was in not insisting that Sandusky be completely barred from campus until the allegations were completely investigated and a decision made. I don’t think Paterno had any intention to enable Sandusky, but Paterno’s decision not to take a strong stance had the effect of enabling. Paterno had clear responsibility which he failed to fulfil, but he is not the monster that some are trying to make him out to be.
How about the fact that Paterno not once inquired into the well being of Sandusky’s victims? What happened to that boy in the shower? Is he trapped somewhere? Is he still alive? Are the police on the way?
Those would be my first questions how about you?
I think you nailed it exactly. There is essentially a lynch mob mentality right now in this case. He clearly mishandled, but the extent is being bent way out of proportion. I wish the NCAA had waited for more info than just the Freeh report....although for the current players, this decision now actually helps them since they are released to play elsewhere without any penalties. Although, it is still late in anticipation of this season, any ,later and they would have definitely wasted a year of eligibility.
Other than shielding a pedophile he was a great guy.
Paternos huge mistake was in not insisting that Sandusky be completely barred from campus until the allegations were completely investigated and a decision made..
...no, Paterno’s huge mistake was apparently convincing Curley to go against an original plan to notify the Child Welfare Agency...I understand that he may have felt he was helping a longtime friend and associate, but it was a blunder of immense proportions...
Paterno was going through the worst 4-year win-loss (26-37)period in his career if this had gotten out he would have been gone for sure. In 2004, Spanier and other PSU officials tried to get him to retire, he refused.
He not only knew he actively covered it up! What ‘good guy’ actively covers for a pedophile?
How does he do that when in September 2001 at the behest of Spanier and Schultz the Board of Trustees of the University approved the sale of a parcel of land to Sandusky's charity The Second Mile.
Paterno had no responsibility for Sandusky's emeritus status and the deal he struck with the university brass which gave him access to university facilities.
However the Board of The Second Mile Board was told of Sandusky's behaviour in 2001. Who are those people and what did they do???
