Good for you! I was thinking when I went out to the back of the warehouse complex to gather the scrape would from some of the many many pallets laying out there that right now we have to pay to get them hauled away, but if SHTF people would be fighting over them!.

I've got a nephew that collects and sells pallets on the side. He makes good money at it. There are companies that will pay for decent (especially oak) used pallets.

It's a revenue stream, or a liability and fire hazard, depending on the amount of time you put into research. ;)

No market here. The company we pay to haul ours off graneds them up and makes wood pellets out of them.

Might be a market to load them on deadhead tractor trailer to market areas. I know I see the occasional flatbed with a buttload of used pallets on them.

Deadhead trucks can be had for low $s/mile.

Something you might want to consider.

I hate wasting resources. Give me a pile of horsecrap, and after I quit looking for the pony, I'm going to figure out how to use it to turn a profit. ;)

Careful with the use of the term deadhead.

And don't use "backhaul" EVER.

Or, go buy your own tractor, buy all the permits, insurance, etc., and go backhaul to your hearts content.

I am not a big time expert, but I do hold a Class A license, and have driven 48 State.

I can hardly imagine local, short distance hauling of pallet loads, ever be in this mythical "oh, the trucker would just be deadheading anyway, so we can get him to do it for cheap" range.

Otherwise, a lot of truckers won't accept loads going to some locales, just because it is difficult to get a paying load outbound. They tire quickly of being despitefully used.

The freight brokers think they get to sit behind their desks and keep all the money. When they start asking, "where are you out of?", that's a sign. When they say "backhaul", hang up the phone!

It's far better to true deadhead/empty for hundreds of miles to pick up a good paying load, than to allow oneself to be taken advantage of.

Every once in awhile I’ll see a truck loaded with stacks and stacks of decent looking, but empty pallets heading away from the city back out to the country. Seems like a waste. I hope that they are the orchard’s own trucks and pallets, and they are just bringing them back to fill them up again.

It's probably something like that, being taken where needed.

Occasionally, they may go some great distance. But it was rare for me to see pallet loads in truck stops as overnighters (or taking a 10 hr break).

I remember talking to one driver concerning a load he had on, and we both we're sort-of surprised at the distance. It happens, but is the exception.

How did you can the raisins and how long will they be good for? Still a rookie at this so some basic instructions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks, I knew you could make snakes uncomfortable by spreading D. E. around the foundation of your house but I didn’t realize it had so many other uses. I just ordered a 50# bag and some mylar bags w/absorbers. I already have plenty of food grade buckets so it looks like I’m good to go. Oh, plenty of pickling lime also.

Yep. I use a very small amount, and mix it in throughly. I use for any grain like rice, beans, corn, or things like pasta. We have a little moth that loves those things, and if you don't protect it, they will get into it.

When I get ready to use that food, I'll rinse it if appropriate, or just knock most of the dust off, if I'm going to grind a grain.

From what I was reading, the stuff is good for you if ingested in small amounts. De-worms and de-parasites you and provides minerals. We know that moth quite well. Good to know we have something to go after it.

I vacuum pack them in canning jars using the jar attachment and my Food Saver and throw in a small oxygen absorber.

My information is 4-5 years if kept out of the light

Pretty good here. We finally had some PM showers for a few days.

Junk yards are gonna be gold mines, and hand tools too.

Be interested to hear what your nephew can do with that. Sounds like they aren’t available just yet so I will keep an eye out.

Watch yer knot!

D.E. works with beans and grains. What do you do for sugar?

I don't get critters in sugar. I leave it in original bags. Or make popskull out of it.

That is seriously impressive. I like the part about the smoke not being in one’s face, and it uses very little fuel.
