Ohio Concerned With Obama Military Lawsuit
Daily Caller ^ | Holly Bensur

Posted on 08/04/2012 10:08:24 AM PDT by rustyweiss74

The Obama for America campaign, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Ohio Democratic Party filed a lawsuit in late July to strike down part of an Ohio law concerning voting by members of the military, Breitbart.com reported on Thursday.

The law currently allows Ohio citizens to vote early in-person up until the Friday before the election, and gives members of the military three additional days to vote.

Democrats contest the law, saying that it is “arbitrary” and possesses “no discernible rational basis.”

The National Defense Committee says that the Department of Defense’s Federal Voting Assistance Program has reported to the president and Congress that the primary “reason for military voter disenfranchisement is inadequate time to successfully vote,” for each of the last three years.

“We are concerned with the premise of the lawsuit,” Maggie Osrowki, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Secretary of State told The Daily Caller. The Obama for America campaign and the DNC “disagree with the additional flexibility” the law gives to military members.

“There are plenty of opportunities for Ohioans to participate in the election,” Osrowki said. Military members are “in a different situation than all the other voters.”

On the other hand, Democraticunderground.com says ”it is extremely difficult or impossible for ordinary people to vote,” because most states require identification in order to vote.

What do you guys make of this? One interpretation states that the military vote is being suppressed, another says they're just trying to extend it to everyone. But wouldn't that, by extension, mean limiting the rights of the one given the privilege?

it’s hard for people to vote it states on the last line.

HUH? so because ID required it’s hard for people to vote, really how about buying booze, cigs, driving, etc

What a crock this administration the left are. They don’t want ID because it’s hardr for illegals to vote and for them to vote early and often or dead people to vote.

If we did not have such a bias liberal crap called the media this country would get the truth and the Dems would not keep getting away with their lies, cheating, fraud etc.

I thought each state was allowed to set its own rules in regards to voting? If Ohio wants to allow extra time for the military votes because they’re half was around the world in harm’s way, the feds have no “standing”.

Screw the Democrats! Screw Zerobama! Screw anyone that tries to disenfranchise our awesome military personnel! And screw any jackwagon that uses the ‘we can’t get a photo i.d.’ argument!

The Ohio law that provides a few extra days for military members to vote actually does not go far enough and should provide members of the military, some veterans and those engaged in pastoral work, seven days after an Election Day to cast their ballots.

Why are the communist ‘RATS suing Ohio? Must have something with the state run “media” saying that you can’t win the presidency without winning Ohio.

A Buckeye here. I am arguing with friends and family that all votes should be made in person and on election day and with ID. Overseas votes can be cast at an embassy or other sovereign US territory (such as an aircraft carrier or military base).

If you are physically unable to travel to a ballot box then the ballot box must be brought to you with all its legal trappings and people.

That is it. It may disenfranchise a few people including a soldier who just cannot make it to the booth. But it would be worth it to reduce the incidence of fraud.

I also believe that anyone who feeds at a taxpayer trough should not be allowed to vote at whatever level they draw their check. Flame away about soldiers if you wish but in another decade or two our military will be remade into reliable government party votes.

Your proposal might well cut down on the number of dead voters.

So the military folks 'feed at the taxpayer trough'? You re as dumb as dickhead Smith.

Flame away about soldiers if you wish but in another decade or two our military will be remade into reliable government party votes.

So because something 'might' happen in 10 years, current servers and retirees should lose their right to vote. Douchebag zot.

Nice job in using a liberals tactics of attacking who said it instead of what was said.

Our army is supposed to defend our Constitution from its enemies not become a reliable vote of one party or another. We will see how you defend military votes when we have Rainbow warriors instead of “The Born Fighting” men we are rightfully proud of.

The change to our military is not a “might” happen because it is happening now and the change will be complete within the next two decades.

What was said was referenced and questioned. The fact you said it shows that you are an idiot who has misused the freedom that others have secured for you. How about the draft? Them slobs lose their vote because they lost the lottery and were forced to serve?

Our army is supposed to defend our Constitution from its enemies not become a reliable vote of one party or another

Lecture someone else boy on what the military is supposed to do. The military isn't monolithic, it is made up of Americans serving nowadays by their own free will and take the applicable oath that makes the thing work. For that they should lose their right to vote? Pathetic asshat zot.
