William Windom, the recognizable character actor who had a career on the small screen spanning seven decades, passed away today at age 88.

For a real mind-blower, William Windom appeared in a made-for-Internet-only version of Star Trek, The Original Series, called Star Trek: Phase II, in which he reprised his role as Commodore Decker.

Paramount, which holds the rights to the Star Trek franchise, agreed to the production, as long as it was entirely non-profit.
It is still in production, making about one episode a year.
He was the guest star in my favorite episode of “Night Gallery.” The title of the episode was “They’re Tearing Down Tim Riley’s Bar.”

I am glad to admit I wrote a script for “Voyager”. The writer core was borrowed from NextGen thru DS9 to ST:V, but Enterprise just blew it.
JMO.
There was once when I saw James Doohan at one of the cons. he was asked which episode of the Originals was his personal fave.
He replied, “Doomsday Machine”.
Trivia bit: Decker from Star Trek: the Motion Picture was originally intended to be the son of the Planet Killer's Decker. (Source: how the hell should I remember where I heard something 30+ years ago? It's true, I tell you!)
I remember that show too. I agree he should have been bigger. I knew who he was at once when reading his name. But, I am a teenager from the 60’s too. :-)
Yup,he was the prosecutor in what is one of the very finest English language films ever made,To Kill A Mockingbird.I also remember him in the original Star Trek...the good one.
I hated the clown in that episode.
Actually, the only reason I know about the earlier Windom is that I once met someone who had written his Ph.D. dissertation about him.

I remember an ‘All In The Family’ episode, (’71 or ‘72), he did as an old pal of Archie’s who made good in biz but had a poor relationship with his son. He could do just about any type of part.
He was on everything in the 60’s and 70’s...we only had three channels, and it seemed like he was on all of them at the same time...
Yes, Inger was cute. She was in a Twilight Zone episode too! Nan something or other. Anyway, I believe the movie “The Farmer’s Daughter” her boss was a Senator!
I remember William Windom.
I remember him playing Thelma Harper’s ex-boyfriend who was about to invest in the then early-1980s range for home computers in one of the funnier episodes of “Mama’s Family”.
When he played the Thurber-inspired sit-com, that was still ahead of its time, it turned me on to James Thurber, his cartoons and his dry-Ohio humorous articles. "The Day the Dam Broke," "The War Between Men and Women," "Is Sex Necessary," most it written for the New Yorker in the 1940's.
I think Thurber died in 1961, IIRC.
Naturally, his "right out of hell, I saw it," moment of Star Trek TOS mello-drammer "The Doomsday Machine" really stands out.
We have NBC to thank, for cancelling both "My World and Welcome to it," and Star Trek.
Idiots...
