Powell's calls this: "Better Off without Em is a deliberately provocative book whose insight, humor, fierce and fearless politics, and sheer nerve will spark a national debate that is perhaps long overdue." It's more like a snarky, elitist and highly stereotypical view of "the South", but does he have a point buried somewhere in all that bile?

A better case could be made for all the predominantly Red states seceding from the predominantly Blue states.

The emergent Red Nation would occupy the majority of the central and southern United States and the Blue Nation would actually be three distinct regions: West Coast, Upper Midwest, and Northeast.

The Red Nation would, through its conservative legal, fiscal, and welfare policies drive liberals along with hordes of like-minded non-productive, social malcontents and misfits across the borders into the Blue Nation. The Blue Nation with its nonjudgemental, openhanded liberality would welcome one and all ultimately leading to a crisis arising from welfare bankruptcy and moral degeneration. Blue Nation would split into three smaller states; Blue West, Blue Central, and Blue East, with each striving to create its own version of liberal Utopia.

In the meantime, Red Nation would militarize and build effective frontier barriers to prevent the remigration of starving, diseased liberals, welfare layabouts, and illegals once Blue State economies collapsed. With its ready embrace of free markets and business friendly economic policies, Red Nation would attract the investment needed to create the new economic infrastructure needed to replace that lost through the partition of the nation.

Etc.

Wonder of he realizes that, since slavery is no longer the emotive issue, a 21st Century secession might result in the Union consisting of just Massachusetts, Connecticut, Manhattan, The District of Columbia, and parts of California. Or that today’s demographics and distribution of wealth and industrial capacity are nearly the reverse of 1861.

Since he wants to ‘give’ Texas to the North, he can kiss my grits!

Interesting proposition. Let the libtards tax eachother 99%, marry their domestic pets and spread social diseases, while the rest of the God-fearing country could say the pledge, have public prayers, and encourage business and energy development.

Texas to the north? The HE77 you say! (Not you, teflon9. The author of the story) Texas should be the *first* to secede.

If Florida went to the South and Texas to the North in the most complex land-and-population grab in American history?

These northen liberals always seem to think they'll get to keep Texas in a north/south split. I have got news for you leftdolts: Texas would go with the South. Period. Just ask most Texans. And trying to force the issue woulx be a baaad idea...

A better alternate is to purge the North east. They don’t like America, they like Europe. All the states north and east and including New York should be purged and possibly ceded to an independent Quebec

The split in the US is largely urban-rural and is found in most every state. But if the US is torn asunder, where should a Jewish boy from New York move?

Please... no.

We have enough problems in the conservative movement without discussing the “merits” of secession.

To even raise that issue waves a red flag in front of a liberal bull.

I realize this is a liberal who raised the issue of whether secession would be a good idea, but some of us are taking the bait. That is not wise.

We all know there is virtually no chance of a secession happening without radical changes in the current political conditions. There is no point in discussing things that have virtually no chance of happening, especially when the discussion can get picked up by others as “proof” of conservatives being neo-Confederates.

This war was lost a hundred and fifty years ago. Let's move on and do what we can to fix the America we still have, not try to revive a Confederacy that failed.
