China stiff-arms FDA on jerky pet treat testing, reports show

Chinese government officials overseeing plants that make chicken jerky pet treats blamed for thousands of illnesses and deaths among American dogs have refused to allow U.S. inspectors to collect samples for independent analysis, newly released records show.

Investigators with the federal Food and Drug Administration came away empty-handed after conducting April inspections at four jerky treat manufacturing sites in Liaocheng and Jinan, China, according to the records.

The plants make pet treats sold by the St. Louis-based Nestle Purina PetCare Co., including the popular Waggin’ Train jerky brands.

Chinese officials stipulated that FDA officials could collect samples only if they agreed to specific conditions, including a requirement that the samples be tested in Chinese-run laboratories.

As a result, “no samples were collected during this inspection,” wrote Dennis L. Doupnik, an FDA investigator who visited the sites.

In addition, the reports showed that the Chinese plants conducted either no laboratory tests or only sporadic tests of the raw materials, including meat used in treats fed to many of the 78.2 million pet dogs in the U.S.

Thank you for the post with the link to rawmeatybones.com. Uncannily, today I noticed my yorkie’s coat looks dismal, as do her teeth. Her breath is bad and she looks droopy. I went looking at dog food today to change brands as I have been unhappy with her Taste of the Wild since the recall (She got Salmonella from it.) I couldn’t decide and thought I’d research online tomorrow.

I stumbled upon this thread and laughed. Typical FR... always there when you need it. I made a midnight run to the grocery store and bought chicken legs, pig feet, pork ribs, pork neck bones, and lamb chops. She turned up her nose at the half of pig foot, but is licking away on the neck bone, not quite sure what to do with it as it is too big to swallow whole. I feel sure she will figure it out. ;)

Thanks again!

My Jack Russell always has a bowl of Blue Buffalo available to him which he seems to really like other than that he’s fed boneless skinless chicken breast 2.00 lb.,Turkey breast 3.00 lb.,95% lean ground round 2.50 lb.,pork tenderloin 4.00 lb.,steak all cuts up to (tenderloin 9.00 lb.)in place of rawhide i steam large cow bones to not boil out the marrow.I’m lucky as a local farmer has a small slaughter operation that has what i consider to be excellent prices and the truth be told his prices are less than what i would have to pay for the Chinese upper end junk.
