Princeton Review ranks top party schools and “stone-cold sober” schools

The Princeton Review hits the shelves today with its 2013 edition of The Best 377 Colleges, and the famous top 20 party schools and “stone-cold sober” schools list is back. The company gave around 122,000 students an 80-question survey on academics, administration, campus life, student body and themselves. From there, they named not only the top 20 party schools in the nation, but also the top 20 dry campus schools in the nation.

Drum roll everybody…the Princeton Review’s top party school of 2013 is West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. WVU’s year is off to a raging start, reported the campus police website, as campus police have already issued dozens of citations for underage drinking and have made multiple arrests outside of campus buildings. The school also won in the Lots of Beer category and came in third for Students Study the Least category. Being the champion of the top 20 party list is no easy feat.

In a very dissimilar manner, Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah has been placed at the top of the Princeton Review’s other list, the “stone-cold sober” schools. This is the 15th year in a row for BYU as the reigning champion of the list, while also claiming the gold in the Got Milk? and Scotch and Soda, Hold the Scotch categories.

“If you look at the schools on this list, they are mostly large, public universities with strong academic and research profiles, as well as highly successful athletic programs,” WVU spokeswoman Becky Lofstead told the Associated Press in response to the Princeton Review rankings. “But in the big picture, clearly this list has no real credibility.”

Among the top five party schools, after WVU, are the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Ohio University in Athens, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Georgia in Athens. Top five “stone-cold sober” schools after BYU? Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD., the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. and Grove City College in Grove City, Penn.a.

My alma mater’s #18 party school in the country? Good ol’ JMU is punching above its weight in that category compared to all those huge “University of” entries. I see not much has changed in the 25 years since I graduated.

I’m actually rather surprised about a few of those “sober” schools. Like the CUNY campii...I guess that’s because they’re almost 100% commuter schools with few residents. And Pepperdine is sober? In Malibu? That’s no mean feat.

Went there for a summer course in ‘84. Spent every night at JM’s.

Congrats to JMU! I’m an old UVA alum and we used to get into the rankings. Well, maybe next year...

If you had to party in Morgantown, doesn’t that take some of the edge off the party?

Ohio U grad here. #3 on list. In the ‘70s, there were about 35 bars uptown, mostly on a three-block long stretch of Court St.

same here.....but I like Morgantown....got my MS & PhD there.
Actually the town has changed dramatically in recent years almost unrecognizable! In a very positive way. (Money magazine named it one of the best small towns to live in in the USA!) The river front has been developed. Many nice restaurants now. My daughter is in grad school there.

I wish I was nursing a beer there right now.

I will admit to not partying in M-Town in the last 4 years. I have driven through and had a couple of meals and they have been making some improvements. It is a bright spot in West by God but I can think of 30 cities in which I would rather reside.

Almost heaven. Best wishes.

I have been to those 30 cities figuratively speaking and around the world....I look back and right now I wish I was in WV....utterly sick of living near DC!

JM’s isn’t there anymore. The University bought all that stuff across South Main Street from the front of the campus and either adapted the buildings for its own use or tore them down and built new on the lots. There’s also an entirely self-contained campus across Interstate 81 from the main campus, near the Convocation Center. It’s massively grown.

I can't speak for party schools 1-6, however, I did spend several years at #7 UC Santa Barbara, so I can assure the good people at the Princeton Review that should they spend just one Halloween in Isla Vista, that they will see the error in their ranking and promptly move UCSB higher.
