Sadly, he probably already is, as is Anthony Stewart Head (Giles, from Buffy, and a forgettable guest villain from season 2). The new incarnation of the show involves a lot of running, along with other physical demands. They'll keep going after younger actors.
That said, Atkinson was brilliant in the part, even if it was a parody. I'd rank him right up there with David Morrissey. (For those who don't know, from me, that's high praise.)
