Ah, some great names—BUT . . .
I could be wrong, but I think a character actor is one who traditionally plays non-leading man/lady roles, such as the sidekick, the leading man’s best friend, the comic foil, the butler, etc.

Gotcha. I suppose one should categorize actors.
Leading man/woman
Comic actors(including those who do drama and comedy with equal ease)
Character actors/sidekicks

Joe Sawyer, Frank Faylen & William Bendix --- any movie with any of these is watchable (except maybe the Sawyer/Bendix comedies where they're taxi drivers).
Add Steve Brodie, Ray Teal, Edgar Buchanan (he was a DDS), Alan Hale, Eric Blore, Akim Tamiroff, and a boatload of contract players.

That's my understanding. And with that I'd like to add the wonderful Ned Sparks and Nat Pendleton to the all time great character actor list. Kibbee and Sparks are as good as it gets IMO.
