Try spraying some solvent into the lever plunger hole and working the plunger in and out - it could be gummed-up with old gun oil. If that doesn't help, use a small pin punch to drive out the plunger retaining pin. Remove the plunger and check for burrs, smoothing any that you find with a file. Try stretching the spring gently before reinstalling the plunger and spring into the lever recess.
Also, if you're not familiar with how to strip that rifle so it can be cleaned from the breech, take a look at Hickok45's channel on YouTube - he recently posted a video on the 336.
