How much Cash Should I have?

If you have been reading this blog for some time you already know that there’s much truth in the “cash is king” saying. When disaster strikes the “cash only” signs go up. When you have to buy / sell on the go, cash makes it happen. When banks go on holydays and everyone is looking for an ATM with some money left, Cash not only buys you good and services, it allows you to get some pretty nice deals. Since we’re talking deals, nothing gets you as many of those as a wad of cash at the right time. For someone looking to close a sale, the money being physically within hands reach, literally speaking, is an important factor. When you have to leave everything behind, what you carry with you and what you have in the bank is all you have left, and if the banks happen to go down along with whatever is forcing you to leave, then what you have with you is all you have left. Looking at different events around the world, if there’s one thing all refugees have in common is that they can all use a fat wad of cash.

Cash will be good only at the very beginning. Not so worried about cash.
Medical supplies though.
Antibiotics
Antiseptics
Aspirin and Acetaminophen
Chilren’s dosages of different meds
bandages
bandaids
Iodized salt
(can be used for eye solutions and nose drops, as well as wound care)
alcohol/peroxide
Mail Pouch tobacco for home remedies
(poison ivy/oak, beestings, almost any rash, lice, ringworm)
Burn medication
Vaseline which can be used in many ways
Listerine mouthwash
Lysol
Epsom salts
Baking soda
Silica gel to repel moisture in pills, sugars, salts, among others
(Rice also serves this function)
More

Better to spend your money wisely now than wait to try and eat dollar bills.

quaters make great shotgun loads for zombies.

Just what kind of shotgun are you shooting? A quarter is 0.955" in diameter, a 12gage bore measures 0.729", a 10ga is 0.775", an 8ga is .835", and a 4ga is 1.052". A dime at 0.705" and might fit a 12ga and a penny at 0.750 might fit a 10ga but they be could be tight in the shell casings. That doesn't allow for a choke either.

I saw a 4ga once. It was about 8 feet long and had a swivel like an oarlock about halfway down the barrel. The owner called it a "punt gun" and said it was used for duck hunting from a small rowboat (a "punt"). I gathered the idea was to find a raft of ducks sitting on the water and sneak up on them through the weeds, then let loose with your single (black powder) shot and gather up the dead ducks. Don't know when it was last used as hunting with anything larger than 10ga. is now illegal.

GtG

Don't need to. Got a well, pump and generator. If that don't work, got a lake and bleach.

Is it OK if the brass and lead is formed into cartridges and pellets?

Now this is what I’m talking about. How many people think of skill as a barter commodity. I don’t think about it because I am one of those people that God blessed with the only skill I have: If it’s man made, I can fix the damn thing. I have no other talent save mechanical aptitude. And to tell the truth, its such a part of me that I never considered it as a barter commodity. Thanks for reminding me of that.

EMT? Wow, now that’s a training that I think I will definitely look into. I can stitch up critters really well, and I can do a half decent job on people in SOME cases. I would feel a whole lot better knowing more about the science behind it. And sewing someone shut is only a fraction of what needs to be known.

Again, thanks for the tip.

Cash? Fiat money? There is no real value to it. Recall the value of fiat currency in Weimar Germany. Ask yourself, how much is a Deutschmark or Franc worth today? How many governments have replaced their currency in the past 30 years?

In a limited SHTF scenario(think Katrina), yes, fiat currency will have value. Beyond that, currency will be in bartering skills, meds, and other things of practical value.

Parting shot, study up on what happened to Germany after WWI. Some Germans survived nicely...

Yep, my parents both left Germany as children (shepherded by grand parents) during the early days of the Weimar Republic and resettled in Wisconsin. My Great-Great Grandmother left a fortune in paper Reichsbank marks behind, she said they weren't worth dragging along.

GtG

PS My folks met and married some twenty years later.

I see cash as a big advantage in the near short term during an acute financial crisis causing bank closures or in an unstable political situation like martial law or a civil war.
In an unstable political situation scenario, the key will be getting cash and gold out of the country. I can’t see taking it out via air travel because the TSA is very focused on this activity. The Canadian border seems like the best bet nowadays. The NW angle in MN has an unmanned US border post and there is plenty of wilderness along most of the border. The other option is by boat, jet ski.
I can tell you one thing, if Obama does win, every freeper will become a prepper to some degree and these discussions will replace the political discussions.

I find that it's important to have several fire-starting methods and toilet hygeine options available, not just cash.

If cash is your only hygiene option, money laundering may be necessary.

Yes - there is that. I have adapted his old ways a bit, to include a hole in the yard. Dad (RIP) lived through the Depression, and probably learned from that to have some stashed away just in case. Later on in life he had a fire-proof safe installed in the basement floor.

For about $20, you can get a fireproof box small enough to store in the insulation between the roof joists and large enough to hold a lot of cash or other items. Label it "family photos" or something similar, and no one will steal it or throw it away.

Yea, I once had a young co-worker visit, and had some other friends and co-workers around that she knew. Doomsday came up, as in economic, collapse. We all started talking about and the implications as if we were talking about the football team for next season...she never heard us mention it prior, or later, just that one time. She asked if we had any doubts it was coming, and we all no - it’s just that no one knows when. It had to freak her out...and maybe got her attention.

perhaps there will be nothing to buy with our cash....perhaps ever gold and silver bars and diamonds would be of no use IF all trucking and shipping stopped...

what goods could one buy?....maybe nothing....

I mean I want to store cash but right now I'm just buying up on canned meats and veggies etc...

well BobL, you make a lot of sense....

sometimes I just think let these leftist Dummies get what they want...no marriage....more abortion...homosexualize the military, kill off oil and gas and the coal industry, and tax the richest people out the wazzu....

believe me, they don't want to live with the consequences of their decisions...
